Joan Snyder was a visionary philanthropist, “grandmother of Canadian women’s hockey” and a true friend to the community. Her generous $67.5-million gift to the ÁůľĹÉ«ĚĂ will take chronic-disease research, sport science and athletics to new heights — for the benefit of all Canadians.

We are honoured to carry on her compassion and dedication by helping the people and community she loved, for generations to come.

Grandmother of Canadian women’s hockey

Joan was a driving force behind the success of women’s hockey in Canada. Her mother Phoebe played hockey in the 1920s and pursued it throughout the Great Depression. Her mother’s spirit inspired Joan to work with UCalgary to create the Joan Snyder Program of Excellence in Women’s Hockey in 2011.

Thanks to Joan Snyder’s unwavering support in the leadership and research excellence in the Faculty of Kinesiology we are now able to take advancements to the next level. Everything from investigations into exercise physiology and nutrition, programs for injury prevention and research into biomechanics and musculoskeletal health will be expanded as part of Joan’s support.
