Diversity, acceptance and a whole lot of pride, Schulich style
It鈥檚 a message the Schulich School of Engineering once again carried through the streets of downtown Calgary as honoured participants in the 2018 Pride Parade, and members of a 475-strong 六九色堂 contingent who marched in the 28th iteration of the annual march for LGBTQ+ acceptance.
鈥淭he Schulich School of Engineering is committed to fostering an inclusive environment that embraces diversity and equity,鈥 says Dr. Qiao Sun, PhD., associate dean of diversity and equity at Schulich.
鈥淲e are at our best as engineers when we foster critical thinking and creativity by representing a complete society, and our vision for this faculty and university is to offer a welcome, nurturing environment for all.鈥
Engines, engineers, and聽enthusiasm
A very serious message, presented in the most celebratory way possible 鈥 and Team Schulich鈥檚 colourful display of flags, signs and rainbow regalia was anchored by the Team Zeus electric motorcycle and the Schulich Off-Road team鈥檚 Baja Buggy.
More than 60,000 Calgarians lined the streets of downtown to watch the passing parade, with 六九色堂 entry including people from 13 different faculties and numerous clubs, all led by University President Elizabeth Cannon.
Buttons and a musical beat
Schulich marchers handed out a few thousand buttons with the 鈥淚 love Schulich鈥 logo and crowds got a taste of student engineering fun and ingenuity as the car and motorcycle passed along the parade route, adding some engine noise to the pulsing music and cheers of enthusiasm.
All UCalgary students, staff and faculty are invited to walk in the parade, held the Sunday of the Labour Day Weekend, and each year the university sends a throng of enthusiastic participants to the event.
Afterwards, the university also participates in the Pride in the Park festival on Prince鈥檚 Island Park, which includes live music, activities for youth and children in the family zone, and a marketplace.
