Faculty of Kinesiology ranks No. 1 in sport science schools in North America and No. 7 globally

The Faculty of Kinesiology at the 六九色堂 is in an exclusive, international class of sports science schools. The faculty took 7th place out of 372 universities in聽, making the faculty No. 1 in North America. The Faculty of Kinesiology has been making a steady climb in the last two years from the 鈥51 and 100鈥 category in 2016, and 29th in 2017.

鈥淚 am very proud of our faculty鈥檚 ongoing accomplishments. We are a multidisciplinary faculty with a focus on human movement, sport and health, conducting both basic and applied research. Our researchers are world renowned leaders in their respective fields,鈥 says Dr. Penny Werthner, dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology. 鈥淥ur research provides evidence of the benefits of exercise for all ages, from a biomechanics and exercise physiology perspective to a behavioral and social science perspective.鈥

Faculty members are experts in a variety of critical areas related to human performance and health, such as nutrition, injury prevention and rehabilitation, concussion, wearable technologies, musculoskeletal health, and mental and physical health.

Methodology for rankings

Among the top 300 universities this year, 17 are sport universities, 283 are universities with sport-related units and 41 universities have more than one sport-related institution or unit. Bibliometric data are collected from the Web of Science database with a time window of five years. The criteria is based on research output, research quality and international collaboration.

Universities are ranked on the following indicators of academic and research performance:

  • Papers indexed in Web of Science
  • Citations in papers
  • Citations per paper
  • Papers published in top 25% journals
  • Percent of internationally collaborated papers

聽is a fully independent organization dedicated to research on higher education intelligence and consultation. In 2016, ShanghaiRanking started publishing the performance of institutions with sport science schools and departments. It has been the official publisher of the Academic Ranking of World Universities since 2009.
