Graduates prepare to take the stage Nov. 9

First in-person convocation in 2 years has new rules to keep it COVIDSafe

That moment when your name is called and your graduation gown swishes as you cross the stage is forever etched in the minds of generations of graduates. This November, we are able to give our UCalgary graduates their moment on stage for the first time since the pandemic hit.

On Nov. 9, 2021, the ɫ will be hosting the first in-person convocation in two years.

It will be a convocation unlike any other.

COVIDSafe convocation

To ensure the university can abide by all provincial health guidelines, graduands will all need to be fully vaccinated and show proof of vaccination to attend. Everyone will also need to wear masks, handshakes will be avoided, and guests will unfortunately not be permitted.

The platform party as part of this celebration will also be significantly smaller than usual. It will consist of only the chancellor, president, provost, chair of the board, deans, and a couple of ceremonial officials.

Ceremony will be livestreamed

Given the number of people who want to be part of this celebration, convocation will be livestreamed. Loved ones, friends and members of the university community are all encouraged to watch fall convocation online and celebrate the success of our students who have achieved their academic goals under extraordinary circumstances.

“Convocation is such a cornerstone in all of our lives. It’s the celebration of years of dedication, of commitment to learning and growing. It’s a milestone and one we are delighted to be able to bring back for our campus community,” says Susan Barker, vice-provost (student experience).

“Congratulations to the Class of 2021. You have achieved so much. We are all proud of you.”
