New and recent grads have built a foundation of knowledge — perhaps it was computer science, writing, international relations, kinesiology or community health. How do they open the doors to apply this knowledge to the workforce?

The Haskayne Master of Management is designed to jump-start early careers for non-business grads by providing an immersive 10-month experience in solving business problems. They will gain knowledge in accounting, finance, human resources, marketing, operations, strategy and entrepreneurship along the way. The first cohort starts in May 2019, with applications open now.

“We have heard from employers and they want graduates who understand business factors in making organizational decisions,” says Dr. Jim Dewald, dean, Haskayne School of Business. “And we have heard from new grads who want to gain business skills to set them apart in their early career. The Master of Management answers these needs.”

The Master of Management is targeted to recent non-business graduates with no more than two years of work experience — with applicants either entering directly from their degree or soon after. The coursework is graduate-level study and students will be expected to take their research and problem skills they have developed in the previous years and put them to work. In contrast, the MBA program draws on previous work experience, allowing for more advanced learning and in-depth leadership development over the longer duration of the program.

“Regardless of your passion, from archeology to zoology, the Haskayne Master of Management builds upon your knowledge with business skills that help you achieve your professional goals,” says Catherine Heggerud, director, Haskayne Master of Management. “As the students tackle business cases and capstone projects, I look forward to the innovative ideas that will be generated by the variety of diverse backgrounds.”

The Master of Management offers a unique experience due to its cohort drawn from a variety of disciplines. The group will learn together and from each other over the 10 months and become an important network as they launch into the job market.

Within the program students will work to refine their ability to identify opportunities and pitch ideas. Career services are built into the Haskayne Master of Management so students can learn how to market their unique skill set and make connections to the Calgary business community.

“With the launch of the Master of Management we offer a full complement of business education — no matter where you are in your career,” says Dewald. Haskayne offers Bachelor of Commerce programs for those just starting their post-secondary education, the Master of Management for non-business graduates with less than two years of work experience and Master of Business Administration programs (full-time, part-time, accelerated and Executive MBA) for professionals seeking to broaden their business knowledge and advance their leadership skills. In May, the Haskayne School of Business announced its first cohort of the Doctor of Business Administration program for senior professionals who are looking for personal and professional development through graduate courses and independent research.
