Online etiquette 101: Staying connected and involved
The fall 2020 mixed-delivery method was announcedÌýin May. While preparingÌýfor your classes, you’ve probably had to incorporate online learning into your studies. As you'dÌýexpect, fall 2020 is going to be a little different. Instead of navigating large lecture halls and crowded hallways, you’ll now need to learn how to navigate the virtual classroom. Although some instructors are preparing online classroom guidelines, you’ll still have to figure out how to keep up with your studies, conduct yourselfÌýin Zoom classes, andÌýfind community on a campus that’s gone mostly digital.

Staying connected with your peers and friends
Your classes might be a mix of synchronous (live)Ìýor asynchronous (pre-recorded) lectures. UCalgary has provided students with access to Zoom for classes and meetings through D2L. Check out from the Taylor Institute.
To help you stay engaged and focused in your online classroom, we recommend keeping your video on. If it feels like you're in a regular class, you’ll be more motivated to complete the course requirements. Also, don’t be shy about speaking up during an online class.
Keep in mind that not having to commute to campus is a bonus, but online classes can reduceÌýyour chances of connecting with others on campus. If you’re looking to socialize, here are a few options to consider:
- creating a weekly check-in with your friends and classmates
- join an to connect with others who share your interests
- Student Wellness ServicesÌýoffers weekly workshops (like mindfulness meditation) to help you with your mental health strategy.
