Prof. Ian Brodie went as part of the Department of National Defence civilian distinguished visitor program. Canada sent more than 600 military personnel along with three RCN ships and two RCAF patrol aircraft, to the exercise. Brodie and the civilian group were briefed by the senior Canadians at the maritime and air operations centres, the overall US commander, Vice-Admiral Wade, as well as Japanese and British commanders. He was welcomed aboard one of the RCAF patrol aircraft and one of the American P-8 aircraft of the type that will eventually come into service with the RCAF. A particular highlight of the trip was spending a day aboard CVN-70, USS CARL VINSON. “It’s 120,000 tons of US power projection,” said Brodie. “Most of it in the hands of 18- and 19-year old sailors."
