TUCFA files application with Alberta Labour Relations Board

Update on TUCFA's request to designate MaPS staff as members of academic staff

In April 2018, the Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Faculty Association (TUCFA) sent a letter to the chair of the Board of Governors of the university requesting that the Board designate MaPS at the university as members of the academic staff. After receiving TUCFA’s request, the university established a Designation and Consultation Process to review MaPS positions and prepare recommendations for the Human Resources and Governance Committee of the Board of Governors with respect to a decision to designate MaPS as academic staff. An internal working group was formed to oversee this process, and has made substantial progress in reviewing MaPS positions at the university.

As a result of Bill 7 (an Act to Enhance Post-Secondary Academic Bargaining), Board of Governors’ decisions with regards to the designation of employees as academic staff are now subject to review by the Alberta Labour Relations Board. While the university’s Board of Governors has not yet rendered a decision with regards to TUCFA’s request, TUCFA has filed an  for determination with the Alberta Labour Relations Board. Specifically, TUCFA has asked the Alberta Labour Relations Board to determine whether MaPS employees are academic staff members. A copy of the Alberta Labour Relations Board’s notice to all affected employees is available . The Alberta Labour Relations Board has communicated its process to review the application and has set deadlines for the parties to adhere to. The university is fully committed to meeting its obligations through this process. The university’s internal working group will continue to review MaPS positions in accordance with the Designation and Consultation Process while the university responds to TUCFA’s application with the Alberta Labour Relations Board.

The Alberta Labour Relations Board has provided the following contact for questions related to TUCFA’s application: Nailya Rakhmatulina, Labour Relations Officer, at 403-297-5887. Individuals may also submit questions to designationprocess@ucalgary.ca.
