UCalgary top 5 nationally in ARWU Shanghai Subject Rankings
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) released its 9 on June 26, 2019. Internationally, UCalgary is placed in the top 100 in six areas including veterinary science, clinical medicine, public health, medical technology, pharmaceutical science, and hospitality and tourism management. UCalgary ranked in second place nationally in economics and medical technology in the Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI) indicator and third place in pharmaceutical science, public health, clinical medicine and agricultural sciences. Based on CNCI indicator, the Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà ranked in the top five in Canada in 11 subject areas (Figure 1). Based on the Publications Indicator, UCalgary ranked in second place nationally in energy science and engineering and chemical engineering, and fourth place in veterinary science, education and earth sciences. Based on the Publications indicator, the Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà ranked in the top five in Canada in seven subject areas (Figure 2).
Methodology
In 2019, ARWU published its third round of subject ranking covering 54 subject areas (up from 52 last year). The relatively new subject ranking relies on Web of Science bibliometric data (InCites) and considers performance in five categories:
- publications
- citations
- top journal presence
- international collaboration
- awards
Category weightings vary from subject to subject. To be included in a subject ranking, universities need to have a minimum number of research publications during the period of 2013-17. The publication threshold is different for each subject. Web of Science categories are mapped to 54 academic subjects. ShanghaiRanking Consultancy is an independent organization dedicated to research on higher education intelligence and consultation. It has been the official publisher of the Academic Ranking of World Universities since 2009.
