A dedicated physician and researcher whose aim is to improve care for people who are pregnant by improving the prevention and treatment of blood-clotting conditions — Dr. Leslie Skeith, MD’10, a master collaborator, is also leading three large international research studies. Skeith also co-founded a thrombosis clinic and a specialized clinic for patients with antiphospholipid syndrome, an autoimmune condition that causes blood clots and pregnancy complications. Skeith’s international research is already paying dividends — in the four years since she completed her training, Skeith has received more than $1.75 million in funding.

What do you miss about student life?

Spending time with a close group of med-school friends every week. Now, we practise in different specialties and live in different cities. Once a year, however, we still get together and it’s like nothing has changed.

Do you remember any classes or professors who were standouts?

One of my favourite teachers in medical school was Dr. Deirdre Jenkins, who inspired me to go into hematology. Now, we share an office space and are colleagues. I knew I had made it as a hematologist once this happened!

What has been your biggest career?

I am leading an international research study on the best way to prevent thrombosis (blood clots in the legs or lungs) for postpartum individuals at risk of blood clots. We need better evidence, and I am proud to contribute to research in this area.

What do you wish you knew more about?

Dinosaurs and fossils, to keep up with my five-year-old. And French, I’m trying to learn French.

Who are your biggest heroes?

My mom who was an amazing family doctor.

Why is mentorship important?

Mentorship is about legacy setting and being generous in a selfless way. My mentors have changed my career path for the better.

When you are not working, what do you do?

Spend time on my uncle’s farm in southern Alberta. We also go to Penticton every summer with my dad and sister.

What are you reading these days?

I am listening to audiobooks, especially at night or on my drive to work. The latest ones are the Rose Code by Kate Quinn and Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

What is one thing that nobody knows about you?

I wake up really early. I love early mornings.
