As the COVID-19 pandemic has escalated, long-term care settings and older adults have been particularly affected. Care providers have had to deal with multiple fast-paced policy changes, staff shortages, resident and family concerns, additional testing requirements, media requests, significant budget implications, and for some, a rising death toll. For residents and families, COVID-19 has bought increased risks to health and well-being, including heightened anxiety and social isolation for many. In this webinar, we look at pre-pandemic long-term care, explore why this sector has been hit so hard, and consider the future of long-term care post-COVID-19. 

About the speaker

Dr. Lorraine Venturato, PhD, is an associate professor and director of international and global health in the Faculty of Nursing at the Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ. She has extensive experience as a clinician, educator, and researcher in care of older adults. Dr. Venturato has an interest in long-term care workforce development and models of care. She currently leads the Alberta team in a national research program aimed at improving palliative care in long-term care across Canada.

About the moderator

Community leader and Calgary journalist Deborah Yedlin was elected the 14th chancellor of the Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ, effective July 1, 2018. Yedlin has been observing, commenting and writing about business and politics for more than two decades, as a journalist for the Financial Post, Globe and Mail and Calgary Herald. In addition to her writing, she has been a regular commentator for CBC Radio and Television, and CTV since 1996.
