UCalgary's Chancellor is a volunteer who works closely with leadership to advance the university vision. 

Becoming the Chancellor of the Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà is the greatest honor of my life. In serving the students, alumni, staff, volunteers and facility of the university, and the city of Calgary, I will advocate for the values of safety, inclusivity and achievement, helping make our great university the best in Canada.

The Chancellor acts as the Chair of the university Senate, which promotes the university’s reputation and priorities, builds long-term support and enriches community relationships.

The Chancellor presides over all degree-conferring ceremonies of the university, including the presentation of Honorary Degrees and Order of the Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ.

The Chancellor serves as a member of the Governors of the Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ, which oversees the management and operation of the university’s business and affairs.

Biography

Canadian Football Hall of Famer and community leader Jon Cornish was elected the 15th chancellor of the Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ, effective July 1, 2022.

A well-known name in Calgary sports, Cornish spent nine years with the Calgary Stampeders, earning numerous accolades such as three-time Top Canadian Player, Most Outstanding Player, recipient of the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s Top Athlete, and two-time Grey Cup Champion. Since leaving the field, Cornish remains deeply invested in the community, working with various non-profits and charities such as the Alberta Children’s Hospital and The Calgary Foundation. He is also the founder of the Calgary Black Chambers, a non-profit that works to make Calgary the best place to live and work for BIPOC community.

What does it mean to be Chancellor?

Students

The Chancellor engages with students through the Chancellor’s Club Scholars, Senate Service Award recipients and student members on Senate. The Chancellor mentors students during their degree program and celebrates with them in conferring their degree at convocation.

Chancellor's Circle

The Chancellor leads the prestigious Chancellor’s Circle, which raises funds for student scholarships and bursaries. The Chancellor’s Circle members meet during the year for special events.

Chancellor's fundraising

We raise funds for student awards through an annual golf tournament, the Chancellor's Challenge, and an annual cycling tournament, the Chancellor's Ride, supporting students across the campus. 

Honorary Degrees

The Chancellor may grant, on the authorization of the Senate, an honorary degree on a person. Selection of recipients is done in conjunction with the President and Vice-Chancellor.
