Linguists ask questions such as: How do languages change? Why are certain words controversial? How do accents form?
Linguistics is the scientific study of language as a universal human phenomenon. This program will give you the opportunity to analyze the structure of various languages and apply this knowledge in a variety of sub-fields and languages. During the course of your studies, you'll gain creative thinking skills, research and analytical capabilities, written and verbal communication skills, and cross-disciplinary understandings.
As a Linguistics graduate, you'll be prepared for career opportunities in areas such as civil service, the non-profit sector, and the business world. A degree in Linguistics can also be used as a stepping-stone to graduate studies or another professional degree such as law, medicine, veterinary medicine, or education.

Language is at the core of every human interaction, and increasingly machine interaction (Hello, Siri). Linguistics is like the geology of human language. We study how Language is processed in the brain, developing models that predict the limits of what is or is not possible in language, and can be built into software. In my research, I work with languages such as Persian, Korean, and Shona — along with digital data from Twitter, and lab experiments using eye-tracking.
