Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Internships in Uganda

This internship opportunity is part of the Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship (QES) program.*

It will be carried out in partnership with the Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ, the host organizations in Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia, and with the technical support of Universities Canada.ÌýThe QES program engages a dynamic community of young global leaders across the Commonwealth to create lasting impact both at home and abroad through cross-cultural exchanges encompassing international education, discovery and inquiry, and professional experiences.

Evaluation and Research Intern -HAY project

  • Must be senior undergrad or graduate level student at UCalgary enrolled in Health Sciences, Development Studies, Sociology, AnthropologyÌýor related degrees.Ìý
  • Job Summary:ÌýMethods and writing, charts & graphs
  • The successful candidate:
    • Excellent research skills (knowledge of quantitative and/orÌýqualitative research methods) and knowledgeÌýof research process (proposals, questionnaire development, qualtrics an asset)

    • Experience with graphic design (canva or ppt, illustrator, other), Office, online platforms (vimeo, youtube, wordpress, website development) and blogging.
    • Video editing/photography skills an asset.
    • Abilities to work with short deadlines and flexibility to adapt to unplanned changes are desired

  • Job summary:ÌýDigital footage editing, manuscript writing, graphic design
  • The successful candidate:
    • Understanding of research processes (qualitative and/or quantitative), including developing project proposals.
    • ÌýUnderstanding of knowledge dissemination process—graphic design or past presentation experience an asset.
    • Abilities to work with short deadlines and flexibility to adapt to unplanned changes are desired

    • Must be mature and independent.

International Relations Communication Intern

  • Job summary:ÌýSupports opps of MUST IR Office, MOUs, Delegation, International visits, communications support
  • The successful candidate:
    • Online platforms expertise (vimeo, website development, wordpress, youtube)
    • Good working knowledge of MS Office (especially ppt and word)
    • Graphic design experience: canva or ppt, illustrator, other.
    • Video editing/photography skills an asset.
    • Communication: experience writing, blogs, stories or other social media). Ability to write using simple language, especially strong writing skills.
    • Abilities to work with short deadlines and flexibility to adapt to unplanned changes are desired
    • The working language is English.
    • Must be mature and independent.
    • Must be flexible and willing to adapt according to the needs of the program and cultural setting with empathy and consideration.

Expected Program Outcomes:

The intern is expected to achieve the following by the end of internship

  • Increased knowledge and skills through academic and professional experiences of Canadian young leaders.
  • Enhanced networking between Canadians and fellow citizens of the Commonwealth.Ìý
  • Increased contributions to local and global communities by young leaders in Canada and the Commonwealth.

    Internships are a minimum of three months long (90 days).Ìý

    Fall internships start in September, Winter Internships in February and Spring internships in May.

    1. Costs

      Students must arrange to get credit for an academic course during the program. Tuition for this course is charged at UCalgary.ÌýOther expenses are paid directly to the service provider.Ìý

      Also, remember to include things like visas, insurance, vaccinations etc in your budget planning.

    2. Funding

      A maximum of $6,000 to cover travel and living expenses will be provided to the selected interns for the duration of the placement. Tuition fees are not covered by the QES funding.

      The QES Program is managed through a unique partnership of Universities Canada, the Rideau Hall Foundation (RHF), Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) and Canadian universities. This program is made possible with financial support from the Government of Canada, provincial governments, and the private sector. Technical support is provided by Universities Canada.

    1. Eligibility requirements

      -ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Students must be in their 3rd or 4th year of undergraduate studies or be enrolled in a graduate program at the Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà at the time of application.

      -ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Must be a Canadian citizen, through permanent residents will be considered.

      -Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýMinimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 (B-)

      -ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Must be 35 years of age or under at time of application

      -ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Must be proficient in English

      -ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý As part of the QES program, the Intern must participate in community engagement activities while abroad and upon their return to Canada

      -ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý This placement must be for academic credit. Interns must register for at least one course. Please discuss your options with academic advisor.

      -ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Strong research skills an assetÌý

      -ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Should possess a creative writing style and background in communications.
