Geomicrobiology, Enviromics, and Microbial Markets

The Geomicrobiology Group, Enviromics Group, and Microbial Markets Lab bring together researchers from the Departments of Geoscience and Biological Sciences from UCalgary and the Faculty of Science and Technology from Athabasca University with expertise in microbial ecology, genomics, and geochemistry. Our research spans from Calgary to the Rocky Mountains, all across Alberta, and beyond into Canada’s oceans. Using cutting-edge tools, we solve microbial puzzles and work to provide solutions to challenges facing the planet. We support a diverse, collegial, inclusive, and equitable research environment fostering scholarship, collaboration, and entrepreneurship.

Dr. Srijak Bhatnagar and the team are researching the microbes of the water microplastics to find microbial solutions to this worldwide problem

Dr. Marc Strous has made groundbreaking contributions to microbial ecology, biogeochemistry and environmental biotechnology, and sparked a major revision of the global biogeochemical nitrogen cycle concept. In 2020, Strous was inducted as a Fellow in the Royal Society of Canada. In 2021, he became the Canada Research Chair for Geomicrobiology.
