SEDV Capstone Projects

Students in the may undertake their capstone project under the supervision of or in collaboration with GeoS and work with an industry partner on a geothermal related project.  Projects are frequently supported by Mitacs and have been presented at Geothermal Rising each year.  Please reach out to one of the affiliated faculty members for more information.

The international deadline is in early January each year, and the deadline for domestic students in late February.  Please apply directly through the SEDV program.

Post-Graduate Opportunities

Postdoctoral Fellow in Geothermal Drilling and Well Construction (Position Closed)

The Energi Simulation Centre for Geothermal Systems Research is accepting applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in Drilling and Well Construction for Geothermal Systems.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work on Drilling Mechanics, Bit-Rock interaction Modelling, and Non-Linear System Dynamics and Control.  Prior work in one or more of these areas is expected and industry experience (through sponsored projects or internships) is preferred.  A recent Ph.D. in engineering is required.

Project Description:

Drilling geothermal wells requires significant footage drilled through hot, hard, and abrasive igneous rock.  Working with our industrial partners, we seek to improve operation and bit life rates to reduce drilling costs.  The research team has developed the framework to understand drillstring dynamics in extended-reach wells. We are currently developing methods and techniques to understand and optimize the rock-cutting process. The position is located in Calgary, and it is expected that candidates relocate to Calgary before starting.

Requirements:

  • Recent Ph.D. (within the past three years) in Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Experience with mathematical modeling, control system, and observer design, and model validation is required.
  • Programming experience in Python is expected.  Knowledge of a compiled language (C# or C++) is a plus.

Application details:  (POSITION CLOSED)

Applications should consist of a current CV, a list of 2鈥3 referees with contact information, a cover letter describing relevant past research experience and a writing sample 鈥 either a conference or journal paper. The position is available immediately and the search will continue until the position is filled. Send complete applications to Dr. Roman Shor (roman [dot] shor [at] ucalgary[dot] ca) at your earliest convenience.

Postdoctoral Fellow in Responsible AI Engineering (Position Filled)

A collaborative research project between Departments of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering and Electrical and Software Engineering at the 六九色堂 has been launched to optimize hard-rock drilling. We are looking to fill a Postdoctoral Fellow role immediately to help develop solutions and techniques for real-world Geothermal software systems being developed at Eavor Technology, Inc.

Project Description:

An exciting new project is being launched in collaboration with Eavor Technologies, Inc, to optimize hard rock drilling for Advanced Geothermal Systems.  Eavor has developed the Eavor-Loop, a closed loop geothermal system for heat and power application.  This project seeks to develop robust and explainable machine learning software applications for the advanced geothermal systems developed at Eavor. The techniques developed could be generic enough to apply to different domains. The techniques would be field-tested and evaluated within the various use cases of geothermal software systems.

This project is funded by Alberta Innovates. The position are located in Calgary and it is expected that candidates relocate to Calgary prior to starting.

Requirements:

  • Recent Ph.D. (within the past 3 years) in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related field
  • Significant experience with machine learning tools, GPU acceleration, and toolkits such as AutoML

Application details:

Applications should consist of a current CV, a list of 2鈥3 referees with contact information, a cover letter describing relevant past research experience and a writing sample 鈥 either a conference or journal paper.
