From self-compassion to security ink, image competition entries reflect diverse range of grad student research
The Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) and the Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) co-hosted the 10th Images of Research Competition this January and February virtually, and received interest and participation from graduate students across all faculties at the Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ.
The competition saw a total of 22 submissions. Participants were asked to submit a research image capturing their research along with both a technical abstract and a general abstract. The aim of the competition was to improve graduate students’ abilities to present their research in a visual format and in simple terms for the public audience.
The panel of judges was: Tommy Nguyen, director of brand and creative, Office of Advancement; Stephanie Warner, manager, knowledge engagement, Office of Research Services; and Kelly Johnston, senior communication specialist, Cumming School of Medicine. After review, the judges chose the top three runners-up for the two categories: STEM and Social Sciences/Humanities/Creative Arts, along with one overall winner of a $500 prize.
The competition also hosted a People’s Choice Award competition on the FGS Facebook page. With 99 votes, our People’s Choice winner is Opening Up New Dimensions in the Study of Human Faces by Cassidy Da Silva, PhD student from the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy, Cumming School of Medicine.
The FGS and the GSA are pleased to announce the runners-up and top winner for this year’s Images of Research competition. Open the gallery to see the winning entries.
