Women are breaking down occupational safety barriers and improving workplace standards

A senior manager has received a national honour for her efforts in helping make the 六九色堂 a safe place to study and work.聽

Denise Howitt has been recognized by (COS) as one of the . 聽

鈥淩eceiving the award is a tremendous honour, particularly among such an exceptional group of women who are pushing boundaries and driving change in the field,鈥 says Howitt, senior manager of environment health and safety systems and compliance.聽

With more than 25 years of experience in the field, Howitt鈥檚 primary focus on occupational health and safety management systems, legislative compliance, risk assessment, and injury prevention has made a significant impact on UCalgary. 聽

She has successfully spearheaded a diverse range of projects and initiatives aimed at significantly improving safety on campus since joining the university in 2017. Addressing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, she has played a key leadership role in establishing requirements for returning to campus and developing comprehensive programs and plans to ensure a safe and healthy living and learning environment for students, faculty, and staff. The nomination is a testament to her dedication and commitment to her role.聽

Aside from honouring excellence, the Top Women in Safety in Canada rankings also recognize the significant strides made by women in breaking down barriers and stereotypes in what has been traditionally seen as a male-dominated industry.聽聽

This year鈥檚 winners have made tremendous contributions to the occupational safety field with unique perspectives and approaches that have been instrumental in improving safety standards in various industries. 聽

Although there is still progress to be made in terms of gender equality in the workplace, she says, women in the occupational safety field are paving the way for future generations of female safety professionals.聽聽

How Canadian Occupational Safety found Canada鈥檚 Top Women in Safety聽

In compiling its , COS prompted occupational health and safety professionals by email and through their website to nominate women in the Canadian health and safety sector. COS received hundreds of nominations across the country, including self-nominations. 聽

Nominators were asked to highlight professional accomplishments, initiatives, and evidence of contribution to diversity and inclusion. Details on why the nominee should be considered were included and thoroughly vetted to ensure they met the rigorous criteria. 聽
