The Students' Union

Did you know as an undergraduate student you are already a member of a very important and influential campus group – The Students’ Union (SU)?

Undergraduate students automatically become a member of the SU upon entrance to the UofC and as a member, have access to a wide range of academic supports, social events and opportunities to make the university experience one of the most exciting times in your life.

The Students Union is made up of elected students who work hard to make the undergraduate experience at the ɫ the best it can be. The SU is independent of the University. The motto of the SU is "to serve and represent students”. The SU advocates on behalf of students on a variety of issues and the service aspect is accomplished through a variety of Students' Union activities.

Events

The SU offers fun and exciting events throughout the year including Cinemania, Enviropalooza, Political Action Week, along with many great musical acts. There is always something to do! For the latest scheduled events check out the SU web site at

Advocacy

The organization also fights for quality education by lobbying the municipal, provincial and federal governments on issues that directly effect students. We help sponsor and create large scale public campaigns to highlight the importance of university funding - all in an effort to lessen the financial burden faced by students.

Academic Support

On the academic side, the SU houses a Student Rights Advisor to assist students if they have academic issues or concerns. To help undergrads reach the peak of their academic potential the SU also offers resources such as travel and conference funding, which is available to help expand academic horizons.

Each year the Students' Union donates numerous scholarships and bursaries to students, and since 1996 has awarded over $8 million to over 10,000 recipients.

Lines of Business

The SU owns and operates a full-service restaurant and bar, the Den and Black Lounge. This popular campus hang-out is the most successful operation of it's kind in Canada. The SU also runs the only major convenience store on campus, the Stor, as well as the used consignment bookstore and copy centre, Bound and Copied, where photocopies are available at affordable prices to the campus community. In addition, the Students' Union manages MacEwan Hall and MacEwan Student Centre.

Clubs

The SU oversees over 150 student clubs offering administrative assistance and guidance.

Government

The Students' Union is governed by a 21-member Students' Legislative Council (SLC), elected by the undergrad student body each February.

The council, made up of current undergrad students, consists of five executive members: a president and four vice-presidents, who are all full-time employees of the Students' Union, and 16 commissioners. The vice-presidents and commissioners are split into four commissions: Academic, External, Events, and Operations & Finance.
