Note: A Minor is offered in Earth Sciences.

The Earth Science program is a single, four-year interdisciplinary program offered by the Faculty of Arts with collaboration from the Faculty of Science. The Department of Geography and the Department of Geoscience are the principal participants in the program in the respective faculties. Since this is a restricted-entry program, students should contact the Earth Science Advisor as early as possible for proper advice regarding the program.

Students completing a BSc or BSc Honours in Earth Science will be eligible for consideration for admission to the graduate program in Geography at the ����ɫ�� and will be eligible for consideration for admission to the graduate program in the Department of Geoscience. Especially in the latter case, additional course work is likely to be required.

APEGGA Regulations

The practice of geology and geophysics in Alberta is governed by Provincial law and regulated by the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA). The Earth Science program is not designed to meet those requirements. Persons intending to pursue geology or geophysics as a profession should obtain a BSc or BSc Honours in Geology, Geophysics, or Applied and Environmental Geology.

Prospective students wishing to enter the BSc (Earth Sciences) Program must meet the criteria in the section of this Calendar on A.2 “Admission Requirements” at the ����ɫ��.

Limitation of Enrolment

Due to high demand relative to capacity, admission to Earth Sciences is limited on a competitive basis and admission averages may be set above the minimum level for the Faculty of Arts. These higher admission standards are applicable to high-school applicants, external transfer applicants from other post-secondary institutions and internal transfer applicants from other programs at the ����ɫ��, whether inside or outside the Faculty of Arts.  Admission will be granted for the Fall Term only and will be based upon academic merit.

Once admitted, a place in the program is assured for students advancing through the program with satisfactory performance. Due to limited enrolment, it will not always be possible to accommodate every student's choice of optional courses in the third and subsequent years.

The Faculty of Arts procedures for Admission to Honours established in section 3.4.3 Honours Degrees with a Major Field are applicable and provide the overall framework. The application deadline is May 1.

Earth Sciences programs cannot be taken in conjunction with programs in Geography. This restriction applies to Major-plus-Minor combinations, Double Majors, Combined Degrees and Second Baccalaureate Degrees.

Programs in Earth Science can be taken in conjunction with Environmental Science, Geology, Applied and Environmental Geology or Geophysics with approval from the Faculty of Arts. Consent is required for Major-plus-Minor combinations, Double Majors, Combined Degrees and Second Baccalaureate Degrees.

Note: Other Minors, Double Majors, and Combined Degree programs are possible.

The Interdisciplinary Field of Earth Science consists of the following courses:

• Archaeology 201 and 596.
• Geography 211, 231, 251, 305, 307, 313, 321, 333, 357, 391, and 599.
• Geology 201, 203, 307, 311, 337, 341, 373, 381, 491, and 510.
• Geophysics 375, 565 and 509.

Notes:

• The supporting geographic methods courses, Geography 333 and 357, are not included within the Field of Earth Science.
• Additional courses in the field may be listed on the Faculty of Arts website.

Course Enrolment Limitations

Geology 311, 337, 341, 373, 381, 401, 441, 491, 503, 541, Geophysics 355, 453, 457, 549, 557, and 559 are limited enrolment courses. Earth Science Majors will have priority registration in Geology 311, 337, 341, 381, 491 and Geophysics 565.
