Students interested in focusing on elementary education (kindergarten to grade 6) require an academic degree from a recognized university, with an academic area normally from the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, fine arts, cultural studies or communication. The elementary route of the BEd (Master of Teaching Program) requires graduates be prepared to teach across the subject areas. Graduates of the program must demonstrate knowledge of, and an understanding of teaching in the elementary subjects of language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science, as well as physical education and the fine arts.  Hence, as of Fall 2011, applicants must complete the following courses, normally prior to entering the program, to be eligible for admission:
- One half-course equivalent in Canadian Studies
- One half-course equivalent in Mathematics
- One half-course equivalent in Science
- Two half-course equivalents in English (or French for the French route) Literature and Composition.
Applicants may apply for one of the specializations listed below:
