Note: Not every 400- and 500-numbered Statistics and Actuarial Sciences course is offered every year. Students in third year should ensure they take a sufficient number of these in order to graduate at the end of their fourth year.

4.5 FCE - Options

Note: The following substitutions allow students to enter the honours program later in their studies:

(a) The calculus sequence Mathematics 281, 283, 381 may be replaced by an average grade of B+ or better in either of the calculus sequences Mathematics 249/251, 253, 349, 353; or Applied Mathematics 217, 219, 309 with permission.

(b) Mathematics 273 may be replaced by a grade of B+ or better in Mathematics 271 with permission.

(d) Pure Mathematics 455 may be replaced by a grade of B+ or better in Pure Mathematics 435 with permission.

Recommendations

It is recommended that 200- and 300-level courses listed above should be taken in the first two years of study. Not every 400- and 500-numbered Statistics and Actuarial Sciences course is offered every year. Students should consult with the divisional office to plan for the upcoming cycle of offered courses as well as for a progress assessment on a regular basis throughout their program.
Actuarial Science 425 is recommended for students in the Actuarial Science program.
The following courses are some of the recommended options for Actuarial Science students in second (or subsequent) years:
- Accounting 317
- Communications Studies 361, 363
- At least one of Economics 201 and 301. At least one of Economics 203 and 303
- Risk Management and Insurance 317 (strongly recommended).
- Options in first year should be selected with these second year options in mind, in order to satisfy prerequisites. At least one half course in Economics is strongly recommended.
The following courses are some of the recommended options for Actuarial Science students in third and fourth years:
- Risk Management and Insurance 449, 459, 559.01, 559.02
While a university program will prepare you to join the ranks of the actuarial profession, it is also important for a student to begin writing the professional examinations of the Society of Actuaries and/or Casualty Actuarial Society as soon as possible - but normally not before the end of second year studies - if he or she wishes to find employment in the actuarial industry after graduation.
