A.ÌýFACULTY OF ARTS REQUIREMENTS
Students must adhere to the applicable Faculty of Arts requirements in 3.4 Graduation.
B.ÌýMAJOR-FIELD REQUIREMENTS
Students must successfully complete a minimum of 8.0 and a maximum of 10.0 full-course equivalents in the Field of English while fulfilling the following requirements:
1.ÌýFoundation Program: English 203, 205, 302 and 340.
2.ÌýCanadian Literature: At least 0.5 full-course equivalents labeled English must be in Canadian Literature. Courses in Canadian literature within the Field of English include English 371, 372, 471, 473Ìýand 509.Ìý
3. Postcolonial Studies: At least 0.5Ìýfull-course equivalent labeled English must be in Postcolonial studies. Courses in Postcolonial studies within the Field of English include English 385, 391, 490, 491, 493 and 515.
4. 400-Level Courses: 2.0 full-course equivalents labeled English at the 400 level,ÌýincludingÌýthe following: one half-course equivalent from English 401, 403, 405, 406, or 407; one half-course equivalent from English 409, 410, 411, 412 or 413; one half-course equivalent from English 431, 433, or 435; and one half-course equivalent from English 441, 443, 445, 447, or 449. Students transferring from other institutions may satisfy part or all of these historical requirements with appropriate period-survey transfer-courses – contact the Department for information. Students must supply detailed course outlines for each proposed transfer-course, in order for such equivalency to be granted.
5.ÌýEnglish Options: At least 2.0 and no more than 4.0Ìýfull-course equivalents at the 300 level or above from the Field of English, including at leastÌý1.0 full-course equivalents labeled English.
C.ÌýOTHER REQUIREMENTS
Language Requirement: 1.0 full-course equivalent in a language other than English.
D.ÌýDEGREE OPTIONS
The BA in English can be taken with Cooperative Education. See section 3.4.5 Co-operative Education Programs for information and requirements.
Notes:
- Up to one full-course equivalent selected from the following list may be counted towards the major field: Comparative Literature 405, 517; Drama 371, 471, 572.01, 572.29; Linguistics 321. These courses may not, however, be used to satisfy requirements 1-4 above.
- Students must choose their courses carefully at the 200 and 300-level to ensure that they have the prerequisites for entry to the 400 and 500-level courses.
- In exceptional circumstances, other courses may be accepted by the Department in lieu of part or all of the Foundation Program, particularly in the case of students transferring from other institutions.
- With Department consent, students transferring from other institutions may satisfy part or all of the 400-level course requirements with transfer courses focusing on the appropriate periods. Students must supply detailed course outlines for each proposed transfer course, in order for such equivalency to be considered.
