Convocation Awards for Graduating Undergraduate Students

Medals presented at convocation are among the most prestigious of university awards. It is the intention of the Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà to uphold the standard of these awards as they reflect the highest academic distinction earned by a student in a particular discipline.

Medallions are presented formally during the spring convocation ceremony in June. Students who graduated at the previous fall convocation ceremony are considered for convocation medals on the same basis as those who graduate at spring convocation.

Gold Medals: Each faculty awards one gold medal to students graduating with the highest distinction in scholarship.

Silver Medallions: Each department or equivalent unit awards one silver medallion to students graduating with the highest distinction in scholarship in their program.

  • Eligibility: For students completing their undergraduate degree program requirements with academic excellence at the Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ. Each faculty and department determines its own definition of academic excellence and establishes guidelines for the selection of medal recipients, with consideration to the following criteria:
    • Grade point average
    • Course load
    • Minimum number of Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà courses taken
  • Application: No application required. Students are nominated by their faculties. It is the responsibility of the Academic Awards Committee to select recipients for the Governor General’s Silver Medallions, the Muriel Kovitz Prize, and the Lieutenant Governor's Gold Medal.
  • Notification: Recipients of convocation awards are notified by email at the end of May.
  • Payment: For those awards including a monetary value, funds are directly deposited into the student's bank account at the end of June. Award recipients must provide their banking information to the university through the online Student Centre.
