For the two-year program, applicants interested in focusing on elementary education (Kindergarten to Grade 6) require an academic degree from a recognized university, with an academic area normally from the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, fine arts, cultural studies or communication. The elementary route of the BEd requires graduates be prepared in a curriculum specialization and to teach across the elementary subject areas. Applicants must complete the following courses, normally prior to entering the program, to be eligible for admission:

One half-course equivalent in Canadian Studies
One half-course equivalent in Mathematics
One half-course equivalent in Science*
Two half-course equivalents in English (or French for the French route) Literature and Composition.

Applicants are also required to select one of the specializations listed below:

Early Childhood Education
English as an Additional Language
English Language Arts
Fine Arts
French
Inclusive Education
Mathematics
Physical Education
Science
Second Languages
Social Studies

Applicants do not require an academic degree in the chosen specialization, but relevant courses are strongly recommended.

For the French specialization, applicants must be fully competent in oral and written French and demonstrate this in an interview.

*All students in the elementary route must take Science 331 in the Faculty of Science to satisfy the requirement of the half-course equivalent in science.

Concurrent Program:
For the 5-year concurrent program, the above course requirements will be built into the Degree Program to which the applicant is registered in the Faculty of Arts, Science or Kinesiology.
