Junior Courses
University 201       Global Challenges Inquiry I
Students will engage in inquiry-based learning to explore solutions to a complex, socially relevant problem using knowledge, evidence, and methods from multiple disciplines, under the guidance of Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà experts. Examples of problems include poverty, water and food security, child health, racial conflict, and gender discrimination.
Course Hours:
3 units; (3-0.5S)
Prerequisite(s):
Completed fewer than 18 units at the time of registration.
Notes:
Students with AP or IB credit or in second year may seek consent to enrol from the Director of the College of Discovery, Creativity, and Innovation. A day-long Global Challenges Conference during Block Week is a required component of this course and must be completed to earn a passing grade. The 0.5 seminar hours account for the day-long conference. Because the conference is mandatory, registration in the course is closed the day previous to the conference. Students who have completed more than 18 units at the time of registration may seek consent to enrol.

University 203       Global Challenges Inquiry II
Students will continue to engage in inquiry-based learning to explore solutions to a complex, socially relevant problem using knowledge, evidence, and methods from multiple disciplines, under the guidance of Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà experts.
Course Hours:
3 units; (3-0.5S)
Prerequisite(s):
University 201 and completed fewer than 18 units at the time of registration.
Notes:
A day-long Global Challenges Conference during Block Week is a required component of this course and must be completed to earn a passing grade. The 0.5 seminar hours account for the day-long conference. Because the conference is mandatory, registration in the course is closed the day previous to the start of the conference. Students who have completed more than 18 units at the time of registration may seek consent to enrol.

University 205       Effective Learning Strategies
Theories, research and practice regarding learning and thinking in adult learners. The importance of metacognition, attention, memory, emotions, motivation and attitudes to learning will be discussed. Students will apply the theory and research to their own learning experiences.

Antirequisite(s):
Credit for University 205 and Educational Psychology 205 will not be allowed.

Senior Courses
University 302       Research on Global Challenges
Explore responses and solutions to global challenges by conducting supervised research. Develop research skills with an interdisciplinary cohort of students, investigating topics such as poverty, hunger, health, education, gender, climate change, racialization, and economic growth.

3 units (1-1T)
Prerequisite(s):
Consent of the Faculty of Arts and completion of 30 units.
Antirequisite(s):
Credit for University 301 and 401.32 will not be allowed.
Notes:
Students should contact the College of Discovery, Creativity, and Innovation regarding consent to register and to identify a supervisor.

A multidisciplinary course addressing issues in research with human subjects. Topics include theoretical approaches to understanding ethics, respect for persons, benefit and harm, confidentiality and publication, and selection of research subjects. Taught by a multidisciplinary team with very broad experience on research ethics boards.
