In addition to Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Schulich School of Engineering requirements, the Department normally requires:
Master of Engineering (course-based)
Students must complete 30 units of coursework as follows:
Master of Engineering
a) 18 units of required courses:
b) 12 units chosen from the following list of courses. If students are interested in combining their courses around a specific theme within the field, please refer to for course selection guidance:
Master of Engineering with Project Management SpecializationAny variations in required courses will be with the approval of the Graduate Program Director.
Master of Engineering (thesis-based)
a) 18 to 24 units of coursework, of which a minimum of 12 units must be Civil Engineering specific graduate courses. All courses require approval of the Graduate Program Director.
b) A thesis related to original analysis and/or design. Master of Science
a) A minimum of 12 units and a maximum of 24 units of coursework.
b) Research and thesis work as major components of the program.
Doctor of Philosophy
a) A minimum of 18 units of coursework beyond the baccalaureate.
b) A minimum of 6 units and a maximum of 18 units of coursework beyond the master's degree.
c) A written literature review, a written thesis proposal and a field of study oral examination.
d) A thesis related to advanced original engineering research.
Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade)
Students admitted to the Schulich School of Engineering will not be allowed to request the Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade)
for any course that is applicable to their degree; or apply any course
awarded a grade of CG towards their graduation requirements.
Students may choose the CG grade for a course taken extra to load.
The use of the CG grade will affect students' eligibility for internal awards.
