Accelerations and Decelerations

Perform multiple reps over 15-20 meters

- Begin from a staggered stance starting position. Accelerate into a sprint followed by a deceleration to a full stop
- Decelerations can occur at designated cones or by a coach's cues (verbal or visual)
- Sit back into semi-squat or lunge position at decelerations
- Knees stacked over ankle when decelerating and accelerating
- Trunk angle similar to shin angle
- Knee caving in on deceleration
- Cue “Knee over pinky toeâ€
- Stiff knees at deceleration
- Cue "Sit back"
- Incorporates a change of direction movement (forwards/backwards), practicing safe deceleration
- Trains proper running mechanics
- Increases warm-up exercise intensity prior to the training session or game
