It takes courage to ask for consent

Asking for consent, though required, takes courage. But what does courage really feel like? It isn鈥檛 heroic, nor does it feel good in the moment. Often, courage feels uncomfortable.

When we ask for consent 鈥 we鈥檙e being courageous and in turn, we鈥檙e opening ourselves up to rejection. To be resilient, we have to expect, and develop strategies to handle, rejection.

What reactions mask your pain?

When we build the听courage to ask someone to be intimate, we鈥檙e vulnerable and leaving our听comfort zone. Whether overt or implied, 鈥渘o鈥 is always a potential answer.听

When we鈥檙e told no, our听it initiates our panic zone. Our response to the panic zone varies for everyone. Which do you feel resonates most with you 鈥 fight or flight?

Fight: Attacking Self

"Oh no, what have I done?"

"I鈥檓 such a fool, what was I thinking? I ruined a good thing."

"It鈥檚 probably because I鈥檓 not attractive. I鈥檓 never going to find anyone that wants me."

Fight: Attacking Others

"I鈥檓 such a nice person, I don鈥檛 understand why they told me no. They clearly have problems."

"I never wanted them anyways."

"They think they鈥檙e all that. They鈥檒l never find anyone better than me."

Flight: Withdraw

"I鈥檓 so mortified. I don鈥檛 want to talk to anyone."

"I don鈥檛 want to go through this ever again, I鈥檓 better off alone."

"Ugh, I don鈥檛 want to leave my bed."

Flight: Avoid

"I鈥檓 going to make sure we never talk about this again."

"I鈥檓 going to pretend this never happened."

"Maybe if I arrive a little later, I won鈥檛 bump into them."

鲍苍诲别谤蝉迟补苍诲听"no" takes many forms. Acknowledge the other person is setting a boundary and their consent isn鈥檛 negotiable, nor personal.

滨诲别苍迟颈蹿测听your relationship to rejection. Which of the above responses feels familiar, and how can you recognize rejection when it happens?

狈补尘别听what you're feeling. Allowing yourself to name rejection and how it makes you feel creates space to build your resiliency and address your discomfort head on. Remember, no one owes you their affection.听It鈥檚 never up to the other person to make you feel better about rejecting you.

Respond听颈苍a way that addresses your rejection by acknowledging that you understand that they have set a boundary. You might say "I didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable, thanks for letting me know," "I completely understand, it was really nice talking to you!" or "I'm feeling rejected right now, and that's okay. I'll work through it and we can touch base next week."

Adjust听your expectations for next time. It takes courage to put yourself out there. Your self-worth isn鈥檛 reflected by whether someone wants to be intimate with you. Tolerating emotional discomfort is an acquired skill. Taking responsibility for your feelings increases your capacity for courage and responding to rejection with kindness in the future.

People are resilient. Rejecting someone else's advances is hard, but you aren鈥檛 responsible for the way that other people react to your boundaries. If you feel you鈥檙e compromising your needs to fulfill someone else's, being coerced or you feel unsafe or disrespected; you aren't giving enthusiastic consent and it鈥檚 not your fault.

Ask First: Creating a Culture of Consent, is a three-year project launched in Fall 2015 by the Women鈥檚 Resource Centre, 六九色堂, in collaboration with the Consent Awareness and Sexual Education Club. It aims to create a campus culture where victim blaming is no longer tolerated and the concept of consent is understood and practiced in the community so all students feel safe and respected.
