Frequently Asked Questions

Agreements

Partnerships with external institutions can be established without the need for a formal agreement. However, a formal agreement may be required for the following:

  • Partnerships involving financial commitments, such as a funding agreement or training program; or
  • Partnerships covering academic programs, such as a student exchange, joint or dual degree program, or involves transfer credits.

The need for a formal agreement for partnerships outside the scope of UCalgary International must be determined by the following:

  • Research Agreements: Contact the
  • Agreements with the Cumming School of Medicine: Contact
  • Joint PhDs and Visiting Student Researchers: Please consult with the before submitting a proposal to UCalgary International.

For other international collaborations, please contact globalaffairs@ucalgary.ca to discuss whether a formal agreement may be required.

Our agreements are prepared in English. If documents are received in other languages or multiple translations are requested, it is the responsibility of the partner institution or the proposing faculty to prepare and review any required translations. We consequently need to enlist a translation services company to verify and proofread the translation.

UCalgary International maintains a database and archive of all signed international agreements. Faculties are provided with a copy for their records.

Our agreements can be signed in wet-ink, electronically, or through digital signature technologies.

Agreements can be complex and may require significant consultation and approvals from both parties. The time required from an initial draft to signing varies. Contact us as early as possible in the process to ensure we can help you meet your target.

Mobility /Student Exchanges

In “faculty-specific” exchange programs, participating students must be majors within that discipline and the courses they may take are normally limited to that area, unless permission is obtained. On the other hand, in “general” or “university-wide” exchanges, participating students from any discipline may participate unless otherwise noted in the linkage agreement.

All students must meet the regular deadlines and application requirements to be considered for an exchange placement.

The Global Learning office, administers general university and faculty-specific exchanges, except for the Haskayne School of Business which manages their own faculty-specific student exchange programs.
