4.44.3 Concentration in Applied Linguistics

Any student who has declared a Linguistics Major is also eligible to declare a Concentration in Applied Linguistics. Applied Linguistics is a wide-ranging field involving career paths in a variety of areas including Second Language Teaching, Translation, Indigenous Studies, Language Policy Development and Machine Translation.

Requirements

At least 3.0 full-course equivalents from the following lists, of which at least 1.5 full-course equivalents must be in Linguistics:

Applicable General Course: Linguistics 373 Sociolinguistics

Language Teaching and Learning Focus:

Translation Focus:

  • French 335 Reading French (Advanced I)
  • French 337 Reading French (Advanced II)
  • Spanish 523 Translation

Native Studies Focus:

Notes:

  • Those most interested in the “Language Teaching and Learning Focus” should include appropriate language and culture courses among their electives.
  • Any exceptions or substitutions are at the discretion of the Undergraduate Director.
