4.1 Bachelor of Nursing Program at the ɫ
Introduction

The ɫ offers an innovative Bachelor of Nursing degree to prepare students for the opportunities and challenges of a nursing career in a changing health care system. Throughout the program, students are provided with a sound theoretical base and supervised clinical experience in a variety of nursing practice settings.

Admission to the Program

See admission regulations in the Undergraduate Admissions section of this Calendar.

Direct Entry Route (from High School):

(a) Standard (high school) Admission: English Language Arts 30-1, Pure Mathematics 30, Biology 30, Chemistry 30 and one other "30" level 5-credit subject.

(b) Adult Student Admission: English Language Arts 30-1, Pure Mathematics 30, Biology 30 and Chemistry 30. The fifth 5-credit subject is waived.

(c) Transfer Admission: Transfer students who do not meet the Transfer Route admission requirements will be considered under the Direct Entry Route admission requirements. This shall be determined on the basis of the grade point average calculated over the most recent course work to a maximum of five full-course equivalents (ɫ courses and/or transferable courses taken at other institutions). All grades within a term will be included except where the number of courses taken within a term exceeds that required to fulfill (to a maximum of) five full-course equivalents, in which case the highest grades will be used. Transfer students must also present the required matriculation subjects as outlined in (a) or (b) above.

Transfer Route:

  • English 30-1, Pure Mathematics 30, Biology 30, Chemistry 30, and one other "30" level 5-credit subject with a minimum 65% average. The fifth subject is waived for adult students 21 years or older.

Plus the following from an accredited post-secondary institution recognized by the ɫ:

  • Aminimum of 45 transferable credits which must include: English (1 HCE), Social Science Option (1 HCE), Statistics (1 HCE), Anatomy & Physiology (1 FCE or 2 HCE)
  • Atransfer Grade Point Average (GPA) which meets the minimum admission average (set annually)

Degree-Holder Route:

Applicants must present the following from an accredited post-secondary institution recognized by the ɫ:

  • An approved baccalaureate degree
  • Aminimum of 90 transferable credits which must include: English (1 HCE), Social Science Option (1 HCE), Statistics (1 HCE), Anatomy & Physiology (1 FCE or 2 HCE)
  • Agrade point average (GPA), calculated on the most recent five full course equivalentswhich meets the minimum admission average (set annually)

Degree holders who do not meet the Degree Holder Route admission requirements will be considered under the Transfer Route or Direct Entry Route admission requirements.

Limitation of Enrolment Enrolment in the BN program is limited. Applicants will be accepted on the basis of academic standing in high school and/or previous post-secondary education completed.
Course Requirements

The Bachelor of Nursing Regular Track Program (Calgary Campus) is in the process of being phased out. Students who were admitted to the BN Program prior to Fall 2010 should consult an earlier calendar.

Students are required to register according to the following schedule. The Nursing Academic Year (see below) is for students admitted through the High School Route. Those admitted through the Transfer and Degree-holder Routes are exempt from completing this.

Other Requirements

Promotion from year to year is by recommendation of the Faculty of Nursing. For the purposes of promotion, Nursing Academic Year refers to Year 1; Terms 1 and 2 are taken in Year 2; Terms 3 and 4 in Year 3; and Terms 5 and 6 in Year 4. The minimum requirement is a grade point average of 2.00 in each of the first two years and 2.50 in each of the last two years.

Students admitted to the 4-year program route must successfully complete all ten first year support courses as outlined under “Course Requirements” prior to commencement of second year (Term 1), unless approved by the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs.

Program Regulations

Duration of Degree Program

Except with special permission of the Dean, the BN degree must be completed within seven calendar years from the date of initial registration in the program.

Transfer Credit

Students transferring from other institutions or faculties within the University are considered on an individual basis. However, students will be required to complete the equivalent of not fewer than ten half courses, at least six of which must be Nursing courses taken as a BN student.

Nurse Registration Examinations

In order to be considered eligible to write the nurse registration examinations, BN students are required to complete the fourth year program requirements with a minimum 2.50 grade point average.
