3.6 General Regulations - BEd
Concurrent Program Requirements for Continuing to Semester 1 of the BEd

In order to enter the third year of the concurrent program (Semester 1 of the BEd Program), students are expected to have:

  • successfully completed ten full-course equivalents.
  • a minimum 2.50 GPA on the last five full-course equivalents (calculated on the courses completed up to and including the Fall term prior to commencing Year 1 of the BEd program.)
Registration

The BEd program is a full-time program. Only students admitted to the BEd will be permitted to register in the BEd courses (EDUC courses).

Attendance

Students are advised to read the general University Regulations regarding attendance in the section of this Calendar headed "Academic Regulations." (See E.3).

Residence

Students are required to complete all program requirements through the Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ.

Field Experience

All semesters in the BEd have a field experience component. The Dean may prohibit a student from registering or completing a semester if it is believed that there is evidence to suggest that the student's physical and/or psychological health may be detrimental to students in schools and/or community and workplace settings.

Students may be required to complete field experiences at sites other than the location in which they reside.

Professional Conduct

Prior to commencing field experiences, students must read the appropriate handbook for the BEd for the year in which they are registered. Students are governed by the Alberta Teachers' Association Code of Professional Conduct and by the Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Faculty of Education Student Code of Conduct contained in that handbook. Students are held accountable to these standards.

Students are expected to utilize their Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà email address for all correspondence with the Faculty of Education and partner teachers/schools.

Criminal Record Check

All school boards require a criminal record check, and this requirement will be applied to student teachers. Upon admission to the program, students will be required to undergo a criminal record check prior to commencement of the field experience.

Duration of Program

Students must complete the BEd within five years of initial registration in the after-degree program and within seven years of initial registration in the concurrent program.

Academic Standing

Students must successfully complete all components in a given term with a minimum 2.50 GPA in order to proceed to the next semester. Students must maintain a minimum 2.50 GPA in each semester of their program.

Students must pass all components of each semester. Participation in all activities related to these semesters is mandatory and will be considered in assessing students’ performance.

Deferral of Term Work

Students who do not meet the objectives for each semester due to absences resulting from extenuating circumstances may apply for a deferral of term work. However, added field experience is not always available, and, therefore, in such cases permission to defer term work may be denied.

Repeated Courses

Students may repeat a course only once and must receive the approval of the Associate Dean to re-register in a course.

Students who need to repeat a course must wait until it is offered in the subsequent academic year.

Unsatisfactory Academic Standing

Students are referred to Section F. Academic Standing in the Academic Regulations section of this Calendar.

Students who have achieved a GPA of 2.50 or less in a given term, are considered to have an unsatisfactory academic standing. Students who have an unsatisfactory academic standing will be placed on academic probation for a period of one year. Students who receive a failing grade in any semester will be required to present evidence of having made an attempt to overcome previous difficulties before they will be permitted a second registration in that semester. Students who have an unsatisfactory academic standing will be reinstated to satisfactory academic standing once they have successfully completed the semester in which they received a failing grade. Students will be allowed an academic probation status only once while registered in the BEd. Students who receive a second failing grade will be required to withdraw permanently.

Probation and Required Withdrawals

Students on probation will be required to withdraw permanently if they receive a second failing grade in a semester. Students placed on probation or who are required to withdraw will be advised in writing.

Students required to withdraw may not apply for readmission in the twelve month period following their withdrawal. As part of the admission process, a written application must be made to the Associate Dean.

Students will be required to withdraw from the BEd program if they have accumulated more than 2.5 full-course equivalent withdrawals while they are a student in BEd program. Students who are required to withdraw will be advised in writing.

Voluntary Withdrawal

Students must notify the Undergraduate Programs Office in writing of their intention to withdraw. After a voluntary withdrawal, students will be required to re-apply and compete with all other applicants for admission.

Leaves of Absence

Upon successful completion of Semester 1, and subsequently at the end of Semesters 2 and 3, students are allowed to request a leave of absence for a period of one year. Only one leave of absence will be granted for the duration of the BEd program. Students who wish to take a leave of absence must make a formal request in writing to the Associate Dean. Students must notify the Faculty of Education by March 1st of their intention to return for the following Fall Term and by October 1st for the following Winter Term. Students who do not return to the program after their leave of absence will be required to re-apply and compete with all other applicants for admission.
