3.6 General Regulations - BEd
Concurrent Program Requirements for Continuing to Semester 1 of the BEd

In order to enter the third year of the concurrent program (Semester 1 of the BEd Program), students are expected to have:

  • successfully completed ten full-course equivalents.
  • a minimum 2.50 GPA on the last five full-course equivalents (calculated on the courses completed up to and including the Fall Term prior to commencing Year 1 of the BEd program).
Registration

The BEd program is a full-time program. Only students admitted to the BEd will be permitted to register in the BEd (EDUC) courses.

Accuracy of Registration

Students are responsible for the completeness and accuracy of their registration and for ensuring that their course selections meet all the degree requirements as detailed in this Calendar. Any departure from standard degree and program requirements specified in this Calendar must receive prior written authorization by the Associate Dean. Students who have not registered in the required courses may lengthen the time to degree completion.

Registration and Consultation

Students who are experiencing difficulty in registration should consult with a BEd student advisor in the Werklund School of Education. Students should ensure that they comply with the dates and deadlines for registration set by the University (see B. Registration in the Academic Regulations section of this Calendar) and allow sufficient time before these deadlines to plan their registration and consult with the student advisors.

Course Load

Additional Courses Outside of Werklund School of Education

Since the BEd program is a full-time professional program, students are not allowed to take additional courses outside the Werklund School of Education in Fall and Winter Terms during their designated years in the BEd program without the express permission of the Associate Dean.

Courses at Another Institution

Students may choose to take additional coursework at another institution to meet certification requirements. The GPA calculation for the Werklund School of Education will not include the courses taken at another institution for certification purposes. Students with poor academic performance, including those on probation or having a large number of withdrawals, will not be allowed to take courses at another institution.

Students may apply online for authorization by requesting a Letter of Permission through their online Student Centre. Students should check with student advisors in the Werklund School of Education to ensure that the courses taken would meet certification requirements prior to enrolling.

Once approved, an appropriate letter will be sent to the Registrar of the other university. The Letter of Permission must be obtained before the student registers for the courses at the other institution.

It will be the responsibility of the student to ensure that an official transcript of grades is forwarded directly to the Registrar of the Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà in order that appropriate credit may be officially recorded.

Attendance

Students are advised to read the general University Regulations regarding attendance in the section of this Calendar headed "Academic Regulations" (See E.3).

Residence

Students are required to complete all BEd program requirements through the Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ.

Duration of Program

Students must complete the consecutive degree program within five years from initial registration. Students must complete the concurrent program within seven years from initial registration. Students who interrupt their degree program in the Werklund School of Education require a Leave of Absence.

Leaves of Absence

Students are allowed to request a leave of absence for a period of up to one year after successful completion of Semesters 1, 2 or 3. Only one leave of absence will be granted for the duration of the BEd program.

Students who wish to take a leave of absence must make a formal request in writing to the Associate Dean. Students returning to the program after a leave of absence, must notify the Werklund School of Education by March 1st if they are returning for the Fall Term and by October 1st if they are returning for the Winter Term. Students who do not return to the program after their leave of absence will be required to re-apply for admission.

Police Information Check

All school boards require a Police Information Check for teachers and this requirement also applies to student teachers. Therefore, all students are required to obtain a Police Information Check annually prior to being placed in a school. The Police Information Check must be dated after June 1st for the current academic year. Students will give a copy of the Police Information Check to the school principal on the first day of each placement. Students will keep the original Police Information Record Check for their records and may be asked to present it to the Werklund School of Education. Failure to provide a criminal record check will jeopardize your field experience and may require you to withdraw from the BEd program.

Field Experience

All semesters in the BEd have a field experience component. The Associate Dean may prohibit a student from registering or completing a semester if it is believed that there is evidence to suggest that the student's physical and/or psychological health may be detrimental to students in schools and/or community and workplace settings.

Students may be required to complete their field experiences anywhere in Calgary or area and they should be prepared to travel.

Professional Conduct

Prior to commencing field experiences, students must read the current BEd Student Handbook. Students are governed by the Alberta Teachers' Association Code of Professional Conduct and by the Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Werklund School of Education Student Code of Conduct contained in the BEd Student Handbook. Students are held accountable to these standards.

Students are expected to use their Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà email address for all correspondence with the Werklund School of Education and partner teachers/schools.

Prerequisites and Progression

It is required that all concurrent students complete Education 201 prior to entering the third year of the concurrent program. Concurrent students who have not completed Education 201 cannot progress to Semester 1 of the BEd program. Normally, students will enrol in this course in Year 1 of the concurrent program.

Normally, concurrent students must have completed 10 full-course equivalents in order to proceed to Year 3 (Year 1 of BEd program) or the express permission of the Associate Dean.

Students must have successfully completed all the Year 1 BEd (400-level) courses with a 2.50 cumulative GPA prior to proceeding to Year 2 of the BEd program.

Students are responsible for checking that they have successfully completed all the prerequisite courses prior to registering for Year 2 BEd (500-level) courses.

Withdrawal from Courses

Withdrawal from one or more courses or from all courses in a semester can have serious consequences. Students are referred to B.14 Withdrawal from Courses and Withdrawal from the Term in the Academic Regulations section of this Calendar.

Before withdrawing from courses, students are encouraged to seek advice from a BEd student advisor in the Werklund School of Education.

Excessive Withdrawals

Students will be required to withdraw from the BEd program, if they have withdrawn from more than 2.5 full-course equivalents in the BEd program. Students who are required to withdraw will be advised in writing.

Repeating Courses

A student may repeat a course previously attempted (excluding withdrawals) only once. To repeat a course more than once requires the permission of the Associate Dean. Permission is granted only under exceptional circumstances.

Students repeating courses taken at the Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà will not have the original grade, failure or otherwise, removed from the transcript of record. The transcript of record will indicate both the original grade and the repeated course with its final grade in the semester in which it was taken.

Taking or repeating a course that is a prerequisite for a higher level course after having completed the higher level course with a grade of "C+" or better will be allowed only with the permission of the Werklund School of Education.

Deferral of Term Work

Students who do not successfully complete coursework or field experience due to extenuating circumstances must provide written evidence and seek the approval of the Associate Dean for a deferral of term work. However, additional field experience placements are not always available and therefore, permission to defer term work may be denied.
