G.2.1 Scheduling of In-Course Assessments

In-person or synchronous online assessments may not be held on non-instructional days (e.g., Fall or Winter Term Breaks, recognized university observances/holidays) or in the days after the last day of classes indicated in the academic schedule as study days.

In-Course Assessments are expected to adhere to the following:

a. In-Course assessments are required to take place during scheduled class time.

i. The timing, location, modality, and any technology requirements of all timed assessments in a course must be clearly articulated to students in the course outline.

ii. Courses with special approvals for common assessments in-person or online that start and end at the same time outside of regular class time, must provide alternative arrangements for students who may not be able to complete the assessment during the common time (e.g. different time zone, caregiving responsibilities, ability to secure an appropriate test-taking environment). The process for arranging an assessment at an alternate time must be articulated in the course outline.

b. Assessments must be scheduled in the same modality of the course component modality. It is intended that approved shifts in assessment modality will not disadvantage students in the course.

c. Approved synchronous assessments for online asynchronous courses must be noted on the course outline with the scheduled date, start and end time.

d. Timed assessments must be designed to be completed within the time allocated for the course component. For example, a 50-minute class would have a test designed to take 50 minutes or less to complete.

e. Mid-year tests for multi-term (Part A/B) courses must occur during the final examination period scheduled by the Registrar, except for mid-year tests that are:

i. take-home, oral, or project-based or for assessments

ii. mid-year tests in the JD, MD, DVM and graduate programs in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape

Exceptions must be approved in advance by the Dean or designate of the faculty offering the course and reflected on the course outline.
