ɫ Calendar 2023-2024 Haskayne School of Business 4. Program Details 4.3 Co-operative Education Program
4.3 Co-operative Education Program
Introduction

All continuing Bachelor of Commerce students are eligible to apply for admission to the Co-operative Education program, with the exception of BSc (Engineering)/BComm combined degree students who are directed to apply to the Engineering Internship program instead. The Co-operative Education program normally includes 8 to 16 months of supervised paid work experience in various private companies and government agencies in addition to the eight required academic terms.

In addition to the Haskayne School of Business regulations governing the Bachelor of Commerce degree and the Co-operative Education program, ɫ Co-operative Education regulations apply. Refer to the Work-Integrated Learning section at the front of this Calendar for additional information.

Students who wish to pursue the Co-operative Education option are urged to discuss program regulations and course selection with Haskayne Undergraduate Student Services early in their program.

Admission

General Co-operative Education program admission requirements are outlined in Work-Integrated Learning section 3.1 Admissions at the front of this Calendar. In addition:

1. Prospective Business Co-operative Education students must complete a Co-operative Education application form. Application and deadline information is available on the Haskayne School of Business Co-operative Education website.

2. Prospective Co-op students who present Strategy and Global Management 303 with a "B" or higher will be exempt from submitting their resume and letter of intent as part of their Co-op application package. Those joining the Co-op program without Strategy and Global Management 303 may be required to complete a variety of further activities to learn necessary material covered in the course.

3. Admission is competitive, based on a review of the student's skills, attitudes, and academic record. A minimum GPA of 3.00, calculated on the most recent 30 graded units, is required for admission consideration. Students may be required to attend an interview to assess their suitability for admission.

4. Applicants with 90 or more units completed towards the Bachelor of Commerce degree requirements are not normally eligible for admission into the Co-operative Education program and/or registration into the first work term.

5. Students are required to pay a non-refundable Co-operative Education admission fee. Details are available in section P.4.7 Undergraduate Co-operative Education/Internship Fees. In addition, they are required to sign the Co-op Student Agreement.

Transfer Credit

1. Students admitted into the Haskayne School of Business Co-operative Education program who wish to transfer the credit of a Co-operative Education work term either from another faculty within the ɫ or from another institution, may email coop@haskayne.ucalgary.ca to request that credit be applied.

2. Credit “by special assessment” for work experience outside of a Co-operative Education work term is not awarded.

3. Bachelor of Commerce Co-operative Education students are required to complete a minimum of two four-month work terms, one of which must be completed while registered in the Haskayne School of Business Co-operative Education program.

Pre-Work Term Requirements

Before a Co-operative Education student's first work term commences, at least 54 units applicable to the Bachelor of Commerce degree program must have been successfully completed. The following must be included:

In addition, it is strongly recommended that at least one 300-level business course relating to the work placement sought be completed prior to the start of employment (e.g., Finance 317 is strongly recommended to be taken before accepting any Accounting or Finance positions).

Work Term Course Requirements

In addition to the regular academic and unit requirements of the BComm degree, students pursuing the Co-operative Education designation must successfully complete the following work term courses:

Each of these courses corresponds to a four-month work term. Where the second work term extends beyond 4 months, with the same employer, students will be registered in a corresponding Co-operative Education 523 for each four month work period. Otherwise, Co-operative Education 523.03 and 523.04 may only be completed with the consent of the business school.

Upon completion of each work term, the student must present a work term report to Haskayne Undergraduate Student Services.

Registration

1. Registration in a Co-operative Education 523 course is required for each four-month work term accepted.

2. Students pay a non-refundable academic course fee while on a work term as outlined in P. Tuition and General Fees, and are considered full-time registered students.

3. Students may not leave a work term or withdraw from Co-operative Education 523 without the permission of the business school. Permission is only granted in very exceptional circumstances. Refer to Work-Integrated Learning section 3.4 Withdrawal Policies for more information.

4. Students are permitted to work a maximum of one Summer (Spring/Summer Intersession) work term, the second work term must take place in the Fall or Winter Term.

5. Sequencing of work terms with academic terms is a flexible process which depends upon the availability of work terms, length of work terms (four or eight months) and the student's academic requirements. However, students must end their Co-operative Education program with an academic term consisting of a minimum of nine units.

6. Once the academic requirements of the BComm degree have been met, students are no longer eligible to participate in the Co-operative Education program.

7. Students taking a vacation or a leave during their work term must inform Haskayne Undergraduate Student Services. Students must work a minimum of 13 weeks, not including vacation or a leave.

8. While on a four-month work term, students may take one evening or weekend academic course.

Academic Performance

1. Students must remain in good standing. If a student's academic performance results in the student being denied further registration or required to withdraw from the Haskayne School of Business, or being placed on probation, the student will be discontinued or required to withdraw from the Co-operative Education program. If the student is discontinued or required to withdraw from the Co-operative Education program but has already accepted a work term, the employer will be informed that the student is no longer registered in the Co-op program. Termination of the student's employment will be at the employer's discretion.

2. Students who receive a Failure (F) on a work term will be required to withdraw from the Co-operative Education program.
