Graduate Certificates in Advanced Nursing Practice
1. Certificates Offered

Students must choose a different specialization in each of the two certificates.

Laddered Certificate Pathway to the Master of Nursing

Students who successfully complete one specialization of the Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice I and a different specialization of the Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice II will be eligible to apply for admission into the Master of Nursing (course-based) degree and will receive credit for the 24 units of coursework completed. Applications must be received within two years of completion of the Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice II.

Programs are delivered online.

2. Admission Requirements

In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies’ admission requirements, all applicants must meet the following requirements:

Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice I

a) A four-year Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing baccalaureate degree preferred.

  • Other bachelor’s degrees from recognized institutions will be considered on an individual basis.
  • Degrees and grades from foreign institutions are evaluated for their equivalency to those of the Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ.

b) Evidence of active nursing registration in Alberta through the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) or active nursing registration in their province or territory of employment. Registered Psychiatric Nurses are expected to provide proof of active registration with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA) or equivalent.

c) A minimum GPA of 3.00 (on the Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà four-point system). This is based on the last two years of post-secondary study consisting of a minimum of 60 units.

d) In order of priority, preference will be given to applicants who:

  1. Hold an active nursing registration in the Province of Alberta;
  2. Hold an active nursing registration in a Canadian province or territory of employment;
  3. International students*.

e) For applicants required to provide proof of proficiency in English, submit a minimum TOEFL score of 97 (Internet-based test); IELTS score of 7.0; PTE score of 68; or a CAEL overall score of 70 (no less than 70 on reading and writing sections). This requirement can also be met by completing the with a minimum grade of "A-" in writing courses.

Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice II

a) Completion of the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice I with a minimum GPA of 3.00.

b) In order of priority, preference will be given to applicants who:

  1. Hold an active nursing registration in the Province of Alberta;
  2. Hold an active nursing registration in a Canadian province or territory of employment;
  3. International students.*

*Note: International students are eligible to apply for admission provided they meet the admission requirements and their local professional licensure requirements. However, they will not be eligible for a study permit as the program is delivered online and considered part-time.

3. Application Deadlines

Deadlines for submission of complete applications are available on the Future Students website: .

The deadline to request a change in specialization is normally one week prior to students starting the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice I or Graduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice II.

4. Advanced Credit

Not given.

5. Course Requirements

Graduate Certificates in Advanced Nursing Practice I and II

Each of the graduate certificates consist of 12 units of coursework. Course requirements are determined by the specialization.

Palliative and End of Life Care

Oncology Nursing

Students must choose different specializations in each of the two certificates (i.e., a student cannot repeat the specialization that they completed in the first certificate when they enrol in the second certificate). Students can complete a maximum of two certificates.

Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade)

The Faculty of Nursing will not permit the Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade) for any course offered by the Faculty.

Students may choose the CG grade in a course taken extra-to-load.

The use of the CG grade will not affect students' ability for internal awards.

6. Time Limits

The expected completion time for each graduate certificate is 12 months. The maximum completion time for each graduate certificate is 2 years.

7. Supervisory Assignments

No supervisor will be assigned for the Graduate Certificates in Advanced Nursing Practice I and II.

8. Financial Assistance

No financial assistance is available for this part-time program.
