Emily Chang to take part in groundbreaking chemistry research at Kyoto University
Scholars Academy student, Emily Chang will participate in organic chemistry research as part of the Amgen Scholars Program in Kyoto, Japan. This program gives undergraduate students interested in pursuing a PhD a chance to participate in scientific research.
Ratik Kapoor named as a finalist for McCall MacBain Scholarships
The McCall MacBain Foundation has recognized three Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà students for their outstanding leadership, community involvement, and academic achievement. One of the three includes Scholars Academy student Ratik Kapoor, from the Schulich School of Engineering, for his work with the Relectric Car Team.
Two out of four Cannon Lachapelle Award recipients belong to the Scholars Academy
Two Scholars Academy students, Tanmoy Newaz and Shubh Patel have been recognized with the Cannon-LaChapelle Award for their entrepreneurial thinking across three faculties. Tanmoy, who is in his final year studying cellular, molecular, and microbial biology in the Faculty of Science, and Shubh, a third-year biomedical student in the Cumming School of Medicine, have both demonstrated exceptional entrepreneurial abilities and innovative problem-solving skills. The award recognizes their contributions to fostering an entrepreneurial mindset and bridging the gap between academia and the business world.

A lifetime of philanthropy: Honouring Charlie Fischer
UCalgary champion receives Association of Fundraising Professionals philanthropy award.
Fischer, who passed away last year, was posthumously honoured by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Calgary and Area Chapter, with their 2020 Generosity of Spirit Outstanding Philanthropist: Lifetime Achievement Award.
Fischer was integral in the creation of Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Scholars Academy, a visionary program that supports and challenges the university’s top undergraduate students. As a mentor to many students over the years, Fischer helped them reach their full potential and become exceptional leaders in their own right.
From Calgary to Ethiopia, with love
While political unrest and violence continue to hamper dreams of peace in Ethiopia, three groups of Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà students hope they can make a difference in the African nation. Led by current Scholars Academy student, Duncan Lucas, one of the projects revolves around designing and testing the feasibility of a solar-powered microgrid for a rural village of 10 households in Ethiopia.
Students harness social media for harm-reduction initiative
The Liam Project focuses on educating and destigmatizing the narrative around substance use and addiction in youth.
The Liam Project resides primarily on Instagram. Content shared by the initiative focuses largely on substance use and addiction information. Annabelle Macrae, a Scholars Academy alumna who just completed her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in political science and global development, is the research powerhouse of the initiative.
First-ever SU Mental Health Award recognizes leaders in mental health awareness
The recipients of the SU Mental Health Award are students who display leadership in the mental health community and are passionate about helping those with mental illness. Scholars Academy students Jen Park and Aaron So were among the recipients that were rewarded for their advocacy, leadership, and hands-on work.

After weeks of forums and online campaigning, undergraduate students at UCalgary now know who their student leaders will be for the 79th Students’ Legislative Council — the decision-making body of the Students' Union (SU). Nicole Schmidt (photo above, centre) is the SU president-elect capturing 76 per cent of the vote. Schmidt will take over from current SU president Frank Finley in May.

The award recognizes exceptional graduating students who have a record of academic achievement, consistently demonstrate leadership and make significant contributions to our community. Recipients include Scholars Academy students Catharine Bowman, Ruth Legese, and Hannah Rahim.
