Violet King Engaged Scholar Award
The Violet King Engaged Scholar Award is a new scholarship created by the SU to recognize the unique barriers, challenges, victories, and lived experiences of BIPOC students at the Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ. The award was created and piloted by 78th Vice President, Semhar Abraha, through discretionary funding, and has now been approved for continued Quality Money funding for the next five years. The Award is named for Violet King, the first Black woman lawyer in Canada, and the 1951 Vice President of the University of Alberta Students’ Union. The SU will now offer this Award to the outstanding BIPOC students on our campus who continue Ms. King’s impressive legacy through their lived experiences, leadership, and community engagement.
Dr. Wanda Thomas Bernard Leadership Scholarship
The Dr. Wanda Thomas Bernard Scholarship is one of three new Faculty of Social Work awards for Black students initiated by the Faculty of Social Work’s Anti-Black Racism Task Force.Â
This scholarship is offered each year to a continuing undergraduate student enrolled in the Faculty of Social Work, Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ, BSW program.
CIHR Research Excellence, Diversity, and Independence Early Career Transition Award
The CIHR Research Excellence, Diversity and Independence (REDI) Early Career Transition Award is a new funding opportunity available to postdoctoral researchers, clinicians, and research associates from specific underrepresented groups to help them launch their research faculty careers in Canada.
The first competition is open to racialized women (including trans and non-binary, and cisgender women) and Black people.
