Territorial Land Acknowledgement

Our laws come from the land, and our practices of granting rights and privileges is a process we were born with, that ties us to this land.

The basic acknowledgement is recommended for the opening remarks at small, internally focused events, like meetings and small gatherings:

[Welcome to the 六九色堂]. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta. The City of Calgary is also home to the M茅tis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).

The specific territorial acknowledgementis recommended for opening remarks at larger internal meetings or small public events:听

The 六九色堂, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut鈥檌na First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the M茅tis Nation of Alberta听(Districts 5 and 6).

The extended territorial acknowledgement isrecommended for opening remarks at large public events, such as 六九色堂 Convocation, building openings听and conferences.

The 六九色堂, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut鈥檌na First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The 六九色堂 is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh鈥檏ins鈥檛sis to the Blackfoot, W卯ch卯spa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts鈥檌sts鈥檌 to the Tsuut鈥檌na. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together 鈥渋n a good way.鈥

Siksika is pronounced 鈥淪ik-sik-a鈥 (please use the short i听 for both听vowel sounds in pronunciation)

Piikani is pronounced 鈥淧膿-gun-膿鈥 (please use the long e for both vowel sounds in pronunciation)

Kainai is pronounced听 鈥淜 墨 -n 墨鈥澨 (please use the long i for both vowel sounds in pronunciation)

Tsuut鈥檌na is pronounced 鈥淪oot鈥 ina鈥澨 (Please use the long o and short i for the vowel sounds in pronunciation)

Chiniki is prounounced 鈥淐hin-i-kee鈥 (Please use the long i for the last vowel sound and short i for the first two vowels)
