4.4.4 BA in Ancient and Medieval History
Introduction

This Major in Ancient and Medieval History is offered jointly by the Department of History and the Department of Greek and Roman Studies. Students considering this Major should consult the departmental undergraduate advisor.

Admission

Students may register for this Major in either the Faculty of Social Sciences or the Faculty of Humanities. For the Major, courses constituting the field of Ancient and Medieval History include all of those listed below (1. through 4.) under "Requirements."

See 3.1 Admissions and other requirements under 3.5 Graduation.

Requirements

Note: History 201 and Greek and Roman Studies 205 are recommended first-year courses.

1. All of Greek and Roman Studies 341, 345, 347; History 319, 321, 323. This requirement constitutes the core program.

2. At least one full-course equivalent from History 325, 423, 505, 506.

3. At least one full-course equivalent from Greek and Roman Studies 305, 315, 415, 417, 419.

4. Courses from the following list, sufficient to bring the total number of required courses in the field to eight full-course equivalents: Greek and Roman Studies 335, 337, 339, 413, 421, 423, 425, 433, 491, 494, History 325, 334, 371, 373, 379, 415.01, 421. 01, 474, 477.01, Philosophy 503, Religious Studies 337, 357, 369, 383, 385, 387, 485, 487 or appropriate special topic/directed reading courses.

Note: For courses outside the Departments of Greek and Roman Studies and History, students should carefully check the pre-requisite requirements as all of these courses have at least one and in some cases multiple pre-requisite requirements.

Regulations

Students in the Major or Honours programs may not take a Minor or second Major in History or in Greek and Roman Studies; Minors in Greek and Latin are permitted.

There is no Minor program in Ancient and Medieval History.
