4.11.3 Combined BA (Canadian Studies)/BEd (Master of Teaching Program)
Introduction

This five-year program, which is administered by the Faculty of Arts, leads to a Bachelor of Education (Master of Teaching Program) from the Faculty of Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Canadian Studies from the Faculty of Arts.Ìý A minimum of 25 full-course equivalents must be successfully completed completed in total.Ìý During the first three years of the program, students take 15 full-course equivalents within the Faculty of Arts.Ìý

Present certification requirements of the Province of Alberta can be satisfied.Ìý When planning courses, students should take into consideration Alberta Teacher Certification Requirements. For details, refer to the Faculty of Education website.

Canadian Studies is currently a "teachable area" for the purposes of Alberta Teacher Certification Requirements.

Admission

Students initially enter the Canadian Studies program in the Faculty of Arts and, therefore, must meet the admissions requirements for the Faculty of Arts as specified in the Undergraduate Admissions section of this Calendar. The completion of one of French 30, 30S, 30N, Français 30, or French Language Arts 30 (or the equivalent from jurisdictions outside of Alberta) while at High School is strongly recommended.

To apply for the combined program, students must first complete a minimum of eight full-course equivalents, which must include Canadian Studies 201 General Studies 300. A maximum of twenty students (ten to the Elementary Route and ten to the Secondary Route) will be accepted into the combined degree annually. Applicants should refer to A.2 "Admission Requirements" in the Undergraduate Admissions section of this Calendar for information regarding admission to the Faculty of Education.

Students are strongly encouraged to develop a competence in more than one language that is relevant to the study of Canada.

After successful completion of all fifteen full-course equivalents specified in the Canadian Studies component of the combined degree program, students will complete the two-year BEd (Master of Teaching) Program.

Intention to Register

Combined degree students must inform the Faculty of Education of their intention to register by March 15 preceding the Fall Session in which they intend to begin the education portion of their programs. Registration in the Faculty of Education must occur within three years of being admitted into the combined degree program.

Students choosing to leave the combined degree program before completion of both degrees would be considered to have left the Faculty of Education and would revert to enrolment in the Canadian Studies program in the Faculty of Arts with all the degree requirements of that program.

Requirements

A. FACULTY OF ARTS REQUIREMENTS FOR COMBINED DEGREES

Students must adhere to the applicable Faculty of Arts Requirements for Combined Degrees in 3.4 Graduation.

B. MAJOR FIELD REQUIREMENTS FOR CANADIAN STUDIES

Students must successfully complete a minimum of 8.0 and a maximum of 10.0 full-course equivalents in the Field of Canadian Studies while fulfilling the following requirements:

1.ÌýCore Courses: Canadian Studies 201, 333, 401, 433, 439, 591; General Studies 300 and 500

2.ÌýTopics Courses: 1.5 full-course equivalents from Canadian Studies 309, 331, 337, 339, 341, 351, 353, 355, 361, 419, 451, 457, 501, 527 and General Studies 407.

3.ÌýCanadian Studies Options: an additional 1.5 full-course equivalents chosen from the Field of Canadian Studies.

C. OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Intercultural Requirement to be fulfilled in either one of the following two ways:

(a)ÌýSuccessful completion of at least 1.0 full-course equivalents from an approved post-secondary Term Abroad, Group Travel Study or Individual Travel Study program.Ìý See the Centre for International Students and Study Abroad for programs that are currently offered.

OR

(b)ÌýSuccessful completion of 2.0 full-course equivalents from the Domain of Intercultural Courses (see section 3.2.18).

Notes:

  • General Studies 201 is recommended in first year.
  • Students take 15 full-course equivalents within the Faculty of Arts and then 10 full-course equivalents within the Faculty of Education.
