A. FACULTY OF ARTS REQUIREMENTS

Students must adhere to the applicable Faculty of Arts requirements in 3.4 Graduation.

B. MAJOR-FIELD WITH HONOURS REQUIREMENTS

As part of their program, students normally take a mix of courses with a “Social-Sciences Emphasis” (List A) and a “Natural-Sciences Emphasis” (List B). Students wishing to graduate with a BSc rather than a BA are required to take a minimum of 8.0 full-course equivalents with a “Natural-Sciences Emphasis” inclusive of Anthropology (ANTH) 311, 353, 413 and 552. Anything less than 8.0 full-course equivalents with a “Natural-Sciences Emphasis” automatically defaults to a BA degree.

Students must successfully complete a minimum of 8.0 and a maximum of 12.0 full-course equivalents in the Field of Archaeology and Physical Anthropology while fulfilling the following requirements:

1.��Core: Archaeology 201, 203, 305, 451, 555.

2.��Regional Archaeology: 1.5 full-course equivalent from: Archaeology 303, 341, 343, 351, 353, 357, 395, 401, 409, 421, 423, 427, 431, 433, 435, 437, 439, 441, 507, 537, 553.

3.��Archaeological Techniques:

(a) 0.5 full-course equivalents from: Archaeology 415, 417, 471, 493, 595;

AND

(b) 0.5 full-course equivalents from: Archaeology 306, 413, 453, 517, 533; Anthropology 552.

4.��Primatology: 0.5 full-course equivalents from Anthropology 311,��413.

5.��Honours Thesis: Archaeology 596 or 598.

6.��Archaeology Options: an additional 1.5 full-course equivalents from courses from the Field of Archaeology and Physical Anthropology (inclusive of the specified Anthropology courses).

C. OTHER REQUIREMENTS

1.��Ethnography: 1.0 full-course equivalent from: Anthropology 317, 319, 321, 323, 355, 405, 419, 427; and Archaeology 307, 345, 355, 357, 399, 419.

2.��Biology Requirement: Biology 231 (Biology 30 and Chemistry 30 are prerequisites for this course).

3.��Geology/Geography Requirement: 1.0 full-course equivalents consisting of either (a) Geology 201 and 203; or (b) Geography 211 and 307.

4.��Language/Computer Science Requirement: 1.0 full-course equivalents consisting of: (a) Linguistics 201 and 203; (b) Computer Science 203 and 231 (or equivalents); (c) 1.0 full-course equivalent in a language other than English.

5.��Statistics Requirement: 0.5 full-course equivalents consisting of: (a) Geography 339 and 439; (b) Psychology 312; (c) Sociology 311 and 315; or (d) Statistics 213 and 217.

D. DEGREE OPTIONS

The BA or BSc Honours in Archaeology can be taken with Cooperative Education.  See section 3.4.5 Co-operative Education Programs for information and requirements.

Notes:

• Archaeology courses used toward the ethnography requirement also count as Archaeology options.
• Some science courses, for example from the Faculty of Science, may be approved to supplement the archaeology courses with a “Natural-Sciences Emphasis” (List B); please consult with the Undergraduate Director for guidance on this issue.
• The Statistics requirement can also be fulfilled by demonstrating proficiency through examination by the Department.
• A foreign language is recommended for Honours students, especially those considering graduate work in Archaeology.
• Successful completion of the Honours program provides a good foundation for graduate work in Archaeology, but does not automatically ensure admission to the graduate program.
• It is strongly recommended that Honours students take the field school courses, Archaeology 306 and Archaeology 506, or other department-approved field-school courses. Students must obtain approval from the Faculty of Arts prior to attending a field school run by another university.
