Introduction
The Bachelor of Communications Studies degree is offered in partnership with SAIT Polytechnic. It is intended for students who want the flexibility and broad interdisciplinary base of knowledge provided by a University degree combined with the practical skills in public relations, journalism, corporate communications and technical production provided by a professional diploma program at SAIT or an equivalent approved program (see BCS program requirements below for a list of approved diploma programs). The Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà portion of the degree (12.0 full-course equivalents) may be taken either before or after the diploma portion of the degree (8.0 full-course equivalents). |
Admission
Prospective students wishing to enter the Bachelor of Communications Studies Program must meet the criteria in the section of this Calendar on A.2 Admission Requirements at the Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ. Annual application deadlines are found in A.3 Deadline Dates for Undergraduate Applications for Admission and Transcripts. Enrolment in the Bachelor of Communications Studies program is limited. Students requesting admission to this program apply to the same quota pool as those applying to the Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications Studies. When a student is presenting a SAIT or equivalent diploma for block transfer credit to the Bachelor of Communications Studies degree, the grade point average for admission to the Communications Studies quota program will be calculated over the entire diploma. Note: Students must apply separately to an approved diploma program and meet all its admission requirements and application deadlines. |
Requirements
A. FACULTY OF ARTS REQUIREMENTS 1. Overall Program: Successful completion of 20 full-courses equivalents inclusive of eight full-course equivalents for an applicable diploma (see below). 2. Program Focus: Successful completion of the Communications Studies Requirements and Other Requirements listed below. 3. Academic Achievement: (a) A minimum GPA of 2.00 must be achieved over all courses. (b) A maximum of three full-course equivalent "D" or "D+" grades overall. (c) A maximum of one full-course equivalent "D" or "D+" grades in the major field. 4. Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Study: A maximum of 10 full-course equivalents in eligible post-secondary transfer credits from other institutions may be counted toward the degree inclusive of the 8.0 full-course equivalents for an applicable diploma (see below). 5. Depth: A maximum of nine full-course equivalents at the junior or 200 level (including the four full-course equivalents of junior transfer credit received as part of the diploma). 6. Breadth: A minimum of one full-course equivalent from the Faculty of Science. 7. Physical Activity Courses: A maximum of one full-course equivalent may be taken from: Dance Education Activity/Theory, Outdoor Pursuits Activity/Theory and Physical Education Activity/Theory. B. COMMUNICATIONS STUDIES REQUIREMENTS 1. Core Courses: 4.5 full-course equivalents consisting of Communications Studies 201, 369, 371, 381, 580; Communication and Culture 301, 303, 313. 2. Topics Course: an additional 1.5 full-course equivalents from courses labelled Communications Studies, 0.5 full-course equivalents of which must be at the 400 level or above. C. OTHER REQUIREMENTS 1. Intercultural Requirement to be fulfilled in one of the following two ways: (a) Successful completion of at least 1.0 full-course equivalent from an approved post-secondary Term Abroad, Group Travel Study or Individual Travel Study program. See the Centre for International Students and Study Abroad for programs that are currently offered. OR (b) Successful completion of 1.0 full-course equivalent from the Domain of Intercultural Courses (see Section 3.2.18). 2. Applicable Diploma: Completion of one of the following two-year diploma programs, or an approved equivalent, with a grade point average of 2.00 on all courses. No more than one and one-half full-course equivalents may have a "D" or "D+".
D. DEGREE OPTIONS The Bachelor of Communication Studies can be taken with Cooperative Education but students may face sequencing constraints and/or require extra time to complete their programs. See section 3.4.5 Co-operative Education Programs for information and requirements. Note: Students must apply separately to the postsecondary institution offering the diploma and meet all its admission requirements and application deadlines. Students who are unsuccessful in applying to the postsecondary institution offering the diploma may transfer to the four-year Bachelor of Arts in Communications Studies at the Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ, or any other Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà program for which they qualify. Courses already completed toward the Bachelor of Communications Studies may be applied toward the Bachelor of Arts in Communications Studies.
Note: Students should enrol in Communications Studies 369, 381 and Communication and Culture 301 and 303, as early as possible in their program of study. |
