Lorna B.
Excellence in Leadership 2017
Biography
Lorna has a B.A. in Psychology (Hons.) major, with a minor in Women’s Studies. Her research focused on the perceptions of victims of sexual violence, with particular focus on factors that influence victim-blaming attitudes and endorsement of sexual assault myths. This research reflects her long term goals – Lorna will pursue graduate studies in either Clinical or Counselling Psychology, with ambitions of working in the realm of trauma and trauma recovery.
In addition to her academic pursuits, Lorna has been a dedicated volunteer and a key member of the WRC community since 2011. Having been relatively new to the concept of feminism when starting her degree, Lorna opted to join the Community Outreach and Peer Support team to garner a deeper understanding of social justice. She said that the Women’s Resource Centre provided invaluable education through events and trainings that have helped shape her activist identity and knowledge – and how she hopes to approach her counselling practice in years to come.
Being a part of the COPS team helped Lorna to explore her passion of supporting others, both in the context of peer support and in a leadership capacity by helping volunteers achieve their goals. Lorna was selected by her WRC volunteer peers to be recognized for outstanding contributions to the WRC and her commitment to fostering an inclusive, compassionate and supportive space for the campus community.
