Clinical Skills Building
LEED Gold
Green Building Highlights
Opening in 2009, this LEED Gold building serves the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Located within the 8,300 square meter building are a number of animal handling areas, laboratories and classrooms, allowing the faculty to do hands-on learning and research about animal health.
Building Layout
To increase energy efficiency, the building was subdivided into three sections: a classroom and office area, a laboratory area and an animal handling area. Placing similar room types together reduces mechanical system’s energy load.
Ponds
The Spyhill Campus is not connected to the city’s stormwater system and as such, has been designed to manage all its rainwater on-site. Run-off water from the animal handling area and rainstorms is filtered through an engineered wetland which cleans the water. The water then flows down and is stored in ponds where it evaporates back into the atmosphere.  Â
Landscape
The site vegetation consist of trees, shrubs and grasslands that are native to the area. The use of native vegetation preserves the biodiversity of the region, helping to protect the soils, plants and wildlife.
