Medical services

Student Wellness Services provides medical care to students and their dependents right on campus. To book an appointment, please call 403.210.9355 or book an appointment online. Walk-in appointments must be booked on the same day, in person.

Your health is important, and we’re here to make sure you get the care you need. Our on-campus clinic can provide you with medical care and education on a variety of health concerns.

Our clinic respects your confidentiality and privacy.

We will protect your health information from unauthorized access, use, disclosure or destruction per the privacy provision of the Health Information Act.

When you receive health services from this clinic, we will collect individually identifying health information in accordance with the provisions of the Health Information Act (HIA). We will collect this health information directly from you, except in the limited circumstances where we are authorized under HIA to indirectly collect such information. Our purpose in collecting your health information is to:

  • provide diagnostic, treatment and care services to you
  • determine or verify your eligibility for health services
  • bill insurance plans for our services
  • internal management purposes
  • provide for health services provider education

Students can book an appointment for a medical concern online or by phoning Student Wellness reception: 403.210.9355. Booked appointments are available for ÁůľĹÉ«ĚĂ students only.

Virtual appointments aren’t set for an exact time, however any availability constraints are noted for the physician and an approximate appointment time is set. We’ll let you know if the physician will call you in the morning (9 a.m. – noon) or afternoon (noon – 4:30 p.m.) on your appointment day. 

Walk-in appointments are available at a first come, first service basis, and can only be booked in person on the same day. Walk-in appointments are available Monday to Thursday, with occasional Fridays. Available days and times can vary and are subject to change. Please speak to a receptionist for more information. The following concerns cannot be addressed through a walk-in appointment.

  • Annual physicals or general check ups without any presenting concern
  • Complex chronic medical conditions
  • More than one medical issue
  • Mental health assessments that are non-urgent
  • Requests for referrals to specialists
  • Follow up for results with any other doctor than the walk-in doctors working that date
  • Well-baby checks
  • Prenatal visits
  • Third-party medicals
  • Driver’s medicals
  • Travel consults
  • Filling out of any forms

Same day urgent appointments are for health concerns that need to be addressed urgently and cannot wait for an appointment. Please call to have your concerns triaged by members of our nursing team. For chronic concerns, your family doctor can provide the best standard of ongoing care.

Out-of-province students must make an in-person appointment and bring an out-of-province health card. Quebec residents will need to pay for the service and arrange for reimbursement through Quebec Health Care.

UCalgary staff and faculty with an urgent concern can call 403.210.9355 to arrange an in-person or phone appointment.

Service dog: Please call us at 403 220 9355 to book your appointment if you're planning on visiting with a service dog. This is to ensure that our healthcare team can appropriately accommodate your needs. Please bring your valid service dog card to add it to your profile.

  1. Before your appointment

    To get ready for your first medical appointment, make a list of medications, vitamins or herbal supplements and known allergies.

    Check that you have your emergency contact’s current contact information. If your information or your emergency contact’s information changes, let us know right away.

  2. Arriving at the clinic (for in-person visits)

    • Bring your identification, provincial health care card, and any extended insurance coverage.
    • Once entering the clinic, you may need to complete one or more intake forms.
  3. Changes to your appointment

    If you cannot see an open appointment, have an urgent concern, or want to change your appointment, please call reception at 403.210.9355 between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday- Friday.

  4. Cancellation policy

    To ensure we can respond to all requests for appointments and to avoid fees, please give one full business days’ notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment.

    All missed appointments will now be subject to a no-show fee.

Booked medical services are available Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Please note that these services are currently modified to phone consults, virtual appointments, or in-person if deemed necessary by our staff.

Eligibility: Services are available for students until 3 months after completing your course work. During this period, your physician or psychiatrist will support your transition to community based services.

  1. Medical care

    • Manage stable chronic diseases (like diabetes or asthma)
    • Treat sprains and other injuries
    • Address skin conditions including rashes, eczema or acne
    • Treat cold and flu symptoms
    • Pregnancy test or initial prenatal care
    • Quit smoking
    • Checking moles and doing a biopsy if needed
    • Treating warts
    • Diagnose and treat mental health concerns
    • Immunizations and allergy shots 
    • Driver's medical fitness
    • Check up
    • Other medical services
    • STI testing
    • Pregnancy testing
    • Birth control counselling
    • IUD and Nexplanon consults

    Dr. Julie Hong provides Botox as a treatment for migraines, by referral from a family doctor.

    If none of these services are what you need, we can refer you to appropriate specialists.

  2. Preventative medicine and immunization

    Keeping regular appointments with a physician is the best way to stay on top of your overall health. We provide annual physical exams, pap tests, STI screening or information about contraception. All of our services are completely confidential.

    HPV Immunizations are available at Student Wellness Services. The Province of Alberta covers HPV vaccine for those 26 years old and under. Those 27 years old and over are still eligible to receive the vaccine however there is a fee for this age group. If you have not previously received the HPV vaccine and are interested in learning more, please phone the main reception line (403-210-9355) to book an appointment to discuss with a physician, or contact your family physician for more information.  

Most of our medical and mental health services are covered by provincial health care. To view a full price list for massage, chiropractic and uninsured services, please visit our Fees page.

Students without valid medical insurance can still access services, such as psychiatry, for a fee.

Our clinic accepts Visa, Mastercard, debit and cheque as forms of payment.

  1. Canadian students from outside Alberta

    Out-of-province billings are not permitted for virtual care visits unless you are a Northwest Territories resident. Please seek in-person medical care in your local area if you are currently living outside of Alberta.

    If you’re a Quebec resident, you’ll need to pay for your service and arrange for reimbursement through Quebec Health Care.

  2. International students

    International UCalgary students should verify they have .

  3. Student Union and Graduate Students’ Association health plan

    Undergraduate students are automatically enrolled in the  through the Students’ Union unless they submit documentation supporting alternate coverage before the due date. 

    Graduate students have their  through the Graduate Students’ Association.
